Comment:
Dr. Heath definitely knows his stuff and explains concepts very clearly in lecture. He teaches mostly through examples, so if you understand them and can apply them to other situations, usually you can do very well on the exams. Students either love or hate him based on how well they can understand him in lecture, but tests are very fair.

if you attend class & rewatch the lectures, this class is both informative and fair. Labs are difficult imo, but Heath really cares about his students and offers bonus marks on assessments!

We had 4 midterms and the final was made optional. He Isn't very clear, his midterms were hard even though they were open book. U have to study A LOT (at least I did). He's funny and a good guy overall. I don't think I would take a class with him unless I absolutely had to. Labs were very annoying since they were online. Don't how I got a 90 tbh.

Dr. Heath wasn't anything special... if you are an auditory learner then I would for sure recommend this class. His slides are pictures only with no text at all so get ready to write and listen. He is an old man who doesn't know technology so definitely not ideal for an online course. We had 4 midterms + lab exam and an optional final exam.

I liked this course very much. Although I would've prefered if he paid more attention to macroevolution because that's the interesting part of evolution, he spent most of the course talking about genetics/microevolution. He is an excellent and fair professor, and his tests have many bonus marks that can bring your mark up. Very recommended.

its just not a good class to take. absolutely avoid it at all costs. going to class you get zero learning done and you just spend the time typing at 10000 words per minute to try to get what hes saying down.

Hopefully you can type fast, otherwise consider recording his lectures as he talks from beginning to end and his powerpoints are only diagrams. I found that he basically reguritated what the textbook chapters said and the book was easier to follow and create notes from despite him reiterating that you'd be fine if you listened to him during class.

Terrible person. Cares only about his paycheck and not one iota about students. As others have suggested is rude and demeaning. Lectures are created right from the textbook and he likely gets kickbacks from book manufacturers for the textbooks he selects. Is married to Julie Smit and together they make 300K or more a year. LIves in an Ivory Tower.

Great lectures! Genuinely nice prof and available for questions. The course was not a bird course but it is possible to get a 90+ if you work for it. Questions were fair and mostly from the lectures (take good notes). Chance for easy marks with the clicker and he boosted your course grade if you scored higher on the final than your current mark.

Genetics is a enjoyable class and your mark is based off multiple assessments. Clickers are done in class and are easy marks as you can work with others. Labs are amazing with great TAs and interesting labs. Be ready to learn a lot of material by yourself as his lecture slides are only pictures. All and all good class that was not a big hassle.

His slides are pictures ONLY and he provides no other resources to study other than practice exams with no answers. If you are like me and can't type/write fast enough in class, you'll have to sacrifice a lot of your own time to understand. His tests are usually fair, but lengthy. Good at teaching and enjoys what he does, but he speaks fast.

Loved him. He clearly knows what he's talking about and enjoys doing it. There are no words on his slides, only pictures so you really need to pay attention but he is still an amazing prof. His exams are pretty fair, just follow his study guide. I will definitely be looking to take more classes taught by him!

I enjoyed the evolution course more than expected. I was always interested in class bc you have to take notes on everything he says, he only provides slides with pictures/graphs. I like courses like this because it forces me to go to class & pay attention. I used the textbook, it helped. Actually do his practice exams bc some q's are on exam.

Evolution is not an easy course and you need to put in a lot of work to do well. Doctor Heath really knows his stuff and the course is a great experience. The textbook is not necessary but you 100% need to go to class if you don't buy it. He is an extremely fast speaker so I suggest you record his lectures to grab the information that you miss.

Midterms were not easy, had to curve because the class did so poorly, they were also way too long, almost the entire class was still writing when he said times up. tutorials were brutal because you're expected to know how to analyze a research paper for an evolution course?? and you have to know the 5 articles for the lab test and final exam...

Dr. Heath may just be my new favourite prof. He loves what he teaches and he gives great lectures. His tests are very fair and you will do better if you read the text book. People say you don't need to but I did and I was consistently 9% above the class average. Uses clickers, the labs are kind of tricky at first. Go to his reviews office hours

Had Dr. Heath for genetics 211 and now I have him again for evolution 341. He is a great man and an awesome teacher. His tests are pretty easy if you study. I personally didn't get the textbook for evolution or genetics and did fine. You have to go to class though because his posted slides are just pictures and he has clicker sessions.
