Comment:
Dr. Mellow is such sweet man and prof. Despite his name, he is not mellow. He is particular and buzzes around class giving you millions of handouts to keep. Often his class consists of looking at the handouts, reading through them and highlighting, underlining and circling instructions. This was fine for in-person, online however, it was very dull.

Dr. Mellow is the most patient professor I have had at SFU. He answers every question we have. Even something he had said in class a lot of times. When you are not able to come to class, he will give you the handout and notes next class. He is the person who is really sweet, please choose the course if he teaches. It is worth.

-Extremely easy course if you have an aptitude for linguistics. I wish we had learned more content rather than just solve the same problems over and over again. He pretty much teaches whatever he wants which is not great for an intro course because it will make the next courses much harder. But it was an easy credit so oh well.

Very clear explanations, but you don't really learn much. He basically gives you all the answers you need for his midterm and final exam. Very strict on writing, which is odd because linguists are supposed to be descriptivists. Regardless, I am glad that I got to encounter Dean during my undergrad and wish he spoke more about his own work.

I have no idea why such morphologist are so willing to make every of his student a newspaper writer. Course itself is easy, and this professor who is the only authority of morphology at SFU claims that he likes every of his course is a writing course. If you like to teach a W course go teach it, not torturing students by bunch of papers.

Dr. Mellow is hands down one of my favourite professors. He is so clear on his expectations and really offers a lot of help outside the classroom for those who need help with their writing or understanding. He is kind, has great wit and is really passionate about what he teaches. I would highly recommend taking his class.

Everyone complains that this course is difficult, but he is very reasonable. This is a writing course so he is picky on grammar. All upper division courses are difficult, and this one is as well as it is a W course. Dr. Mellow is always available for help when you need it.

Dr. Mellow is one of my favorite professors in the Linguistics department. His lectures are very interesting, and timed extremely well. He is polite and respectful towards students, and available for help. He is a fair marker and very clear in his expectations. You always learn something new in his lectures and he is quite humorous as well.

A very concrete and lucid lecturer. I also had him as a TA and he did a good job of engaging the entire class in guided problem solving-- not an easy task in an intro course! He ran an extra seminar before the final and posted extra practice materials online. Clearly knows his stuff, very organized, and interested in student input.

Dr. Mellow is a great prof. His lectures are clear, and he is always available for help. As long as you attend class and tutorials, the exams and assignments should be doable. But the grading scale for this class is crazy high. 91 is an A-

He is very organized, and an interesting professor. His grading system is extremely high. Like 97 and up is an A+. But if you pay close attention to his examples and assignments, you will find that the exam formats are quite similar. Overall, great prof.

Two years later this prof gets a sad face. How odd. Agree to prior rating. He just likes to teach what he wants, I didn't learn a single thing in how first language is acquired waste of my $600 tuition and initial interest. All 1 in class essay, midterm, final, and paper are difficult, for he ONLY cares on HOW you right not WHAT you write. AVOID!!!

Nice person but not a good teacher. He only marks you on how you write and not what you write, so if your not a good writer with an LPI of 6 then don't even think about getting an A or anything close to it. His 72% is a C-. It is not even a Writing intensive class. Did not learn anything in the class. if you take his class make sure u have LPI 6.

Although he's known to be a tough marker, I think he's probably one of the professors that actually make sense during the lectures. His classes are very informative, but dry. He is very helpful indeed. To do well in his class, never get help last minute.

According to his course syllabus, you need at least 80% to get a B. That is absolutely ridiculous. Anything below 60% is a Fail. No part marks are given so if you make a minor mistake on anything (exam or assignment), you get a zero. Yes, the content is easy, but the class is not.

Comment:
So I took this course thinking it was going to be easy. It is easy. VERY easy. However - the grade inflation in this class is nuts!! I got 87% on the midterm and it only scored me a B!! He is a tough marker as well. Tutorials are great since they supply you with all the info you need to write the exams, but otherwise, the text is near-useless.
