He inspired me to go into sociology and anthropology. His teaching style is something that can be difficult for some to get over, but for those that know how to listen, his classes are a dream. If you don't listen, don't run to the Provost and complain like a rat. Just bow out or learn to understand different means of teaching.

LOVED his class and his lectures and him. Best professor on campus. He is funny and really cares about all his students. He is willing to help you with whatever you are struggling with. Lectures and the book are fascinating and he really brings it to life. He does a lot to get the students participating and involved. Such a fun class.

This man is a wonderful professor and an awe-inspiring human being. I aced all of his classes, because I followed his instructions to the letter and asked for help. He knows what he's doing, and he's happy to help you (but only if you're going to give it 100%).

Wost. Class. Ever. Lectures were boring and unrelated to what was actually on the tests. And the tests were hard. He's a really nice man, but a really awful teacher.

My class was supposed to be about contemporary theory relevant to today's world, yet Thorsen assigned 1 article written by a woman during the entire semester. He said derogatory things about gay marriage in class and declared (quoted verbatim) "cultural studies makes sociology less of a science." ALL readings were from a conservative viewpoint.

He doesn't help at all. If you have questions, be sure to have someone's notes, because he can't help you.

If you read the book, the tests aren't bad. He's very understanding if you need to miss class and is always willing to help.

He's a good prof and his class isn't that hard if you read the book (also, check out the textbook website for test prep). Sometimes his lectures are tedious, but there are snippets of wisdom that make them wortwhile. Also, I never felt he forced any conservative views on the class. If anything, he seemed fairly liberal for his age.

AVOID THORSEN IF POSSIBLE!! If you visit him in office he never give straight answers. I'm not sure you'd call what he does in class teaching.

AVOID AT ALL COST!! Terrible teacher. Lectures are tangets that may or may not have anything to do with the reading. I went to his office and didn't answer my questions. He just beat around the bush. Reading the book is important because if you didn't you'd only get a couple of questions right on the test if you depended on the lectures.

I just dont like his teaching style, repeats the same things everyday without changing much, only the context in which he puts it. Very boring and makes me wanna go to sleep, and I've never slept in classes before.
