This was a strange experience in the sense that I have taken many history classes and this was by far the hardest. I had to drop it before the midterm because I found it far to difficult to memorize the specificities of the topic. Clearly cares and is entertaining but expects the absolute most out of his students on a niche topic.

His lecture is organized and easy to follow. No textbooks but weekly readings. To be honest, it doesn't matter if you do not read cuz he only requires to remember the points and notes from his lecture.

Although Scottish Film History might sound like a pleasant course, you should really avoid. 4 mini essays, 1 "book review essay" (very vague criteria...), and a essay-length take home final. Didn't receive over a B on one of them. Films are OK

Class was fairly easy, all lectures mirrored the powerpoint notes but attendance was taken as 10% of your grade. Films shown in class were pretty meh, and I felt as though we did not link the films to the mass amount of history we covered in a lecture. Our "research paper" was an essay review of the text which was the most boring assignment ever.

Prof Wood was a good teacher (and cool about me sliding a paper under his office door) but I would not recommend this class (Scottish History in Film). While interesting, Wood marks extremely hard (on 3 out of 5 papers, not one received over an A-) and fails to connect the films together in any significant way.

Comment:
Professor Wood comes into the class assuming that students have pre set ideas about the material. However, this leads to confusion among students. He is not clear on explaining ideas. Which makes office hours of little use to attend. Prof Wood marks hard. He gives little feed back on the assignments and will not discuss mark with you.

Easy going prof, seems likes he's re-using some material from before. Gives you the information you need to study (Loved that about him) Didnt use to the textbook at all, BUT textbook was relatively cheap compared to most, so its doesnt hurt. Clear cut criteria, he knows what he wants, just follow that and youll get B+ or higher

Dr. Wood displays no respect for students who he is not already familiar with. Doesn't give feedback on papers which had very vague criteria to begin with. If you ask for feedback, he is very condescending which makes it difficult to improve. Was excited for this class, now disappointed.

Oh. My. Goodness. Most unhelpful professor I have ever had. I would ask the occasional question about an assignment and be made to feel like a complete idiot for even being in his office. He is humourless and an unnecessarily hard and inconsistent marker. The topic was interesting and his lectures were great, but I did NOT enjoy his attitude.

Good prof, interesting sense of humour (loves Monty Python) but don't wear any soccer jerseys to class other than ManU. Has a lot of energy for such dull material. Exams are fair, but he (through his TA) marks tough, expect to get hurt. The paper was something of a waste of time, lots of work for something essentially unrelated to the course.

Very hard marker, expect a GPA hit. The assigned Essay does not have anything to do with science, its a play on the Life of Galileo. Goodluck

He was okay. His final and midterm were fair - he gave us the question for the final a week before. The assigned essay has NOTHING TO DO with the class, it's a load of !@#$.Anyways,I wrote alot in his class, probably 3 double sided pages per day.He is a Habs fan,I will give him that.He is the type of guy that you picture teaching History

He was a great professor and 396 was a great class. I highly recommend him, although he isn't the easiest marker in the world. If you're willing to put the effort in, he is well worth it!

I was really fond of him, and thought he was good teacher and very approachable. However, I went through some personal troubles and he has zero sympathy, and was a complete hard-ass and such a jerk. I couldn't believe it was the same guy. I am totally bias, but the way he treated me made me drop his class half way through.

He has stopped for the most part reading word for word. He concentrates on primary sources for course lectures which is refreshing but 17th Century was diffucult to understand then! His projects could use more direction but he gives the freedom to construct a thesis. Prepare to work hard and buy your textbooks well in advance as there are many.

This course covered a lot of information. Definitely a writer's cramp course. Interesting. Very, very, very, very hard marker. I got a good grade, but I literally did not see family friends for months on end! Work hard and maybe you'll get a good mark.

Contrary to others' comments, I rather enjoy his lectures. They are verbose, and he is reading from a lectern word for word, however! he did inform us of this in sept. I did find the marking for the paper very subjective, and the criteria was vague. He does give midterm and final exam questions before the exam date, which is nice. He is a great pro

Paul manages to take what should be one of the most interesting topics in the department of history, and destroy every intriguing aspect of it by reading WORD FOR WORD essays to the class. He is definately one of the hardest markers I have ever encountered, but since he gives exam questions in advance, this is to be expected. Expect a GPA hit.

Comment:
HIST260: Not recommended for phil. majors who want a grounding in history of science. Paul claims to incorporate his experience as a phil. student. That was 30 years ago! His love of Kuhn is telling of his age & of his failure to follow the field. Arguments are consequently implicit to a narrative delivery ill-suited to the needs of phil majors.
