Comment:
Extremely difficult class. We were expected to write a book review on a book that wasn't part of the course readings(20%).Also, 20 reading logs need to be submitted (for 40%) and 10 of them need to be non-course readings. Plus theres about 200 pages of reading every week. O and he crams 4 hrs worth of material into a 2 hr lecture. Good luck

There's a lot to read but it's a history course. His lectures are interesting and clear, but the only problem is occasionally he uses deep, loud "UM!"s during his lectures.

There were lots of information to learn so this course felt like a 12-credit instead of a 6-credit course. Hoffmann talks fast and it's hard to write good notes unless you have a labtop. I'd recommend this course only if you're really interested in the subject and determined to study hard.

A very interesting and informative prof, but he speaks very fast. It is CRITICAL that you take notes in this class (I had 300 pages). Save ALL the handouts you get. As well, be sure not to miss ANY classes. Even one skipped lecture can damage your grade as the entire exam is more or less from the lectures. Any word he speaks may appear on the exam.

A lot of reading, the most work for any course that I had ever taken, and the most satisfaction of any course I had taken at York (and I was a film major). He is without a doubt the best teacher that I ever had - his enthusiasm is infectious. I wish I had more teachers throughout my school years like him. PS - I now produce historical documentaries

Prof. Hoffman is an excellent lecturer and Proffessor. He is passionate about the course and Medieval History. He is very nice, funny and inspirational. There is however a heavy load of information from readings to lecture notes and note taking. He does provide handouts and study sheets. This course will make all others seem like spring break!

While his lecture style is probably best summed up as "Muppet on crack," he certainly keeps you on your toes and makes even the boring stuff at least mildly interesting. If you try to write down everything he says, your arm will fall off, because he says a lot and say it FAST. Friendly guy, easy to talk to.

By far my favorite prof, ive had him for two years, once as a TA as well. its true that he includes a lot of information in his lectures, but ultimately they are the best notes i have because they include everything you need to know for essays or exams. he also gives out handy printouts of his slides

Terrible Prof! Throws way to much stuff out in lecture, making it hard to absorb everything, along with heavy reading. He seems to think that 50 mins is enough time to write 5 short answers and 2 essays. If he is teaching this course, stay away. :( Wait for Cohen, he's a much better Prof. :)

a lot of info for 1 hr of class. he keeps u on ur toes. pointers: u dont need to study everything. divide info into topics & study 4/9, ex: THE REFORMATION, MONASTICISM, etc. Readings aren't necessary if u attend classes and tutorials. good luck for future classes!

One of those people who is always having to stretch himself to remember how to relate to people who can't automatically read any language they look at or perform other improbable intellectual feats.
