He gave over a paragraph of feedback on nearly every assignment, told me things I might have missed, and graded purely based on composition--not taking points off if my perspective differed from his. This really encouraged me to express myself. One of my best professors ever. One caveat: as a slow reader, the reading list was rather stressful.

This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Cook and I would take a third! He is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject of Science Fiction. In this class, specifically, with the new incorporation of Canvas he really bent over backwards to make the class run smoothly. Great professor, I definitely recommend!

Super easy class. Three reaction questions for the first week, then papers due each week with 3 - 5 pages in length. Last week was a movie of any recent-ish movie review, exactly 250 words long. Timely responses - welcomes questions. Super fun teacher. I would take a class with him - so going to. He chose good books and was very chill.

Professor Cook is awesome. This class was extremely interesting even to someone like myself who had never picked up a Sci-fi book before. At first it's a bit intimidating because he edited almost every assigned text book, but he is a fair grader and gives meaningful feedback. He also provides study guides and great lectures.

Professor Cook definitely knows what he's talking about in Science Fiction. The readings he chose for the semester really held to what the standard is of Science Fiction. His feedback was amazing and really gave extra insight, and he was quick at making sure assignments were graded in a timely fashion. No exams, just discussion posts and essays!

The best thing about this class is that Professor Cook has selected some really great science fiction texts that are entertaining and interesting to read. A few short novels and lots of short stories. Grades are based on discussion posts and two papers. Interesting lectures, but not very interactive. Easy A if you just put in the effort.

This guy is so disorganized. One week, he assigned reading, which didn't correspond to the HW question and had questions that didn't match up with one another. He didn't notice. He also never deleted old due dates or updated the discussion board area, so there were three pages of repeated questions. Hard to know where to post. His feedback sucks.

The prof. himself doesn't interact a lot with the students but the feedback he does give is beneficial. Reading assignments every week (very easy), two 10+ page drafts are due, and weekly story workshops (this part is time-consuming). Overall, it's hard to fail this course.

The hardest I have ever worked to receive a failing grade. He doesn't follow the syllabus. His point scale changes at whim. You may think you've passed the class, but then he decides to change the scale and suddenly you've failed and there is nothing you can do. He has said he wants to stick it to the university. Awful teacher.

DB post each week, 2 total papers, weekly lecture. Definitely learned a lot about sci-fi, he's really knowledgeable about the genre & also science in general. Really challenges students to have an open mind/be aware of ongoing changes. Pay attn/do hw accordingly and you'll get full cred. Interesting lectures, but you might get offended if religious

Dr. Cook is an interesting professor. He is quite passionate about the industrial revolution and spends about 80% of class meetings finding ways to bring it up--even when it doesn't apply to the assigned reading. He does, however, have a solid SciFi reading list. Easy grader. Do the readings and follow the instructions.

Super fun reading list, and super easy class. You pretty much read the books and then write about them.

My experience was miserable with this prof. The teacher is unresponsive to emails. Never got a grade for a paper. Doesn't grade in timely fashion & leaves C&P comments unrelated to your specific work. Reading list fun. Discussion posts unrelated to poorly written & error-ridden "lectures." Never bothered reading them. Easy but frustrating A.

Really enjoying Dr. Cook's class on literature. He seems to put in effort for his students as well as making a difficult subject interesting. I had never taken an interest in literature because I had never understood it. This class has made it something to keep me thinking.

A lot of reading! Read his lectures and read the assigned books. Not clear on grading, didn't grade the discussion until 3 weeks in, so wasn't sure what he was looking for. Once I got the feedback, the rest of my discussions were A's. Doesn't reply to emails timely, or not at all. No Hallway Conv Board for general questions. Not hard class tho.

I took Sci-Fi Studies with Cook, and was very impressed. His format was simple, discussion boards once a week, and attendance questions due in class. His lectures were very interesting if you like Sci-Fi. Most of your grade will come from papers, which aren't too tough but a little long.

I took Pulp fiction with Dr. Cook last semester and had an excellent semester with him. It was a good break from a tough instructor I had previously. In Dr. Cook's class I felt like I could relax and just enjoy the material. Some of his responses on my graded papers were copied and paste (generic response.) Excellent class!

This is the second time I have taken Cook. Also took him for 307. I think you get what you put into this class; you can breeze through with his easy grading, but he's truly passionate about wanting you to learn. If you choose to engage in the material, it's valuable. Lots of reading, but limited homework. No tests. Good feedback on papers.

Easy grader, but expects you to read entire books in 2 days. His lectures are unorganized and full of errors. Emailing him for help is NOT helpful, even if you get a response out of him. He expected us to dish out money for a book halfway through the semester because he made us buy the wrong one at the beginning of the class.

A different list of books was on the ASU page and Blackboard (found that out AFTER buying them). He required an anthology that he himself had compiled, only found as a $60 ebook! I didn't buy it though; all the stories from it were free online! Blackboard was a mess. It was clear that he put very little effort into the course. Easy grader, though.
