MIchael gills is a really smart, accomplished and critical writer. His class is hard! But your writing will be so much better afterwards. Also, he is a published novelist; he knows what he is doing. Take classes from him, believe me.

This class was online during the COVID pandemic. It consisted of three 4-5 page essays, a thesis analysis, a presentation, and a 10-20 page final paper. It was a heavy workload class and included daily discussions, but it helped us build relationships with peers. We got good feedback and Gills was supportive and respectful.

Gills is a great man, but be ready to work! He is very fair with his grading and is very reasonable. He has a great heart and truly wants you to succeed, you have to want to work though. He cares about his students without a doubt.

I LOVE THIS GUY. An absolute lunatic of a writer, he is extremely talented himself so you're learning from the best. This class will test your writing but there is no wrong answer! You put your best effort in, write the pages and no matter how garbage you think your storytelling is you'll leave this class with 15x more skill. 1000% recommend.

Travel writing is such an amazing class. Gills truly cares about all of his students, especially in this challenging class. You have to write a page a day and log in daily to canvas, but the payoff in the end is all worth it. I would recommend this class and this professor to anyone wanting to fulfill their CW credit. Gills is a talented writer.

All feedback is given in difficult to read cursive. Gills is not clear on what he wants with revisions and takes a substantial amount of time to get papers and revisions back to students. He is a respectable writer and professor but I found his class confusing and his manner irritating and disrespectful.

This class really forces you to be a better writer. It's an upper-division writing class for a reason. I would highly recommend taking this class if you're working on a research paper or honors thesis. If you're taking STEM classes, writing these big papers is going to be a challenge, but he can and will help you if you make the effort to see him.

Michael's instructions are vague and he refuses to answer questions even when directly asked. Very disrespectful towards students and will publicly shame and humiliate them for having poor writing skills or disagreeing opinions. Feedback generally felt inapplicable, especially for STEM students. My enjoyment of writing tanked after this class.

Gills is amazing!!! Hands down the best professor I've had. He is so passionate and willing to work with you. Tips: develop some thick skin and internalize his critique. Be ready to work. But he is so good. Grades on the effort you put into his class. 10/10 would recommend!

Personally, I enjoyed having Professor Gills as my writing professor. His lectures are my favorite part of the class, as they are engaging and force you to think. He also tells the class wise lessons that you will never forget which I loved! ONE PROBLEM: You can't see your grade until the END of the semester so stay on top of things!

What this class consists of: A total of 6 (4-10 page) papers, about 2 oral presentations (lasting from 7 to 10 minutes each), & everyday participation in class discussions (usually for giving feedback on each other's papers). Tough. But Gills is a respectable professor who is passionate about writing and teaching students.

I hated every second of this class. He is rude to students, will tell you that your opinion is wrong unless it coincides with his. He makes you have "discussions", more like arguments. He doesn't put any grades in until end of term. Made fun of our writing errors in front of the class. Doesn't answer questions when you ask for help. Don't take this

Professor Gills has really helped me improve on my writing as a student. Though his rigor coursework may be a deterrent, he offers a plethora of extra credit as well as rewrites to raise the grades on your paper. The only people who'd dislike this class are usually the students who don't want to put in so much work.

I have NEVER been more frustrated with a class. I got 5s on my AP English and Literature tests so I know that my writing is passable, but professor gills dishes out Bs to everyone in the class. I went to him several times to find out how to ace his class but he was very vague and rather rude. He often tries to embarrass students for fun.

Professor Gills cannot be trusted. He has no grading rubrics and gives very vague instructions. He is often very rude to students and constantly demeans writing efforts. Your tuition money will be better spent with a professor who is clear on his grading methods and is respectful to his students.

He cares about how much effort you put in, and about how effectively you can use your life experiences to write. He's a good writing teacher, even though he can be tough and the work he assigns may be intimidating. His feedback can be harsh sometimes, but he means well.

Gills took the time to help me through out the semester. I didn't realize it when I took the class but looking at professors that I have dealt with now Gills was there to help and wanted to see me succeed with my writing. If you like to write, you will love this class. You have to commit to the work to get the grade.

Comment:
This class was predominantly nightmarish. Prof. Gills was condescending and rude to students. He only provided feedback on final drafts, and often it was vague. Grading seemed arbitrary because the prof. lacked rubrics and never assigned a percentage/point value to papers, he merely provided a letter grade. I will never take this professor again.
