Had this Yates for Research Methods and he is very specific on what HE wants and what HE thinks is important. He knows his stuff and is very bright in his field but the class has a lot of work that he is not always clear about. His tests are pretty in depth as well and you have to provide what he is looking for or else you're screwed.

Dr. Yates isn't bad at all if you're a good student. He does expect you to do what he assigns you. As long as you do your work you'll be fine. It helps if you answer questions in class sometimes. Research Methods requires a lot of researching (of course) but just do it. Current events isn't a big deal, just do it. Showing up for class is important.

I took research methods with this professor way back in the day, 2003. His class is the most challenging course I have ever taken. He did spend a lot of time in class talking about current events, for the most part this didn't bother me as it kept things interesting. His projects are tough but you do learn

Fantastic professor! Always offers help, and answers any and all questions. He's pretty laid-back too. Very clear when explaining things. You definitely have your work cutout with this class. I spent a lot of late nights working on homework, but passed! Attendance is not mandatory, but I missed a few classes and fell behind. I highly recommend him!

I do not recommend taking any classes with this professor. He enjoys belittling students and making passive aggressive digs whenever he feels necessary. If you have strong liberal views, then take his classes you'll get along great. He consistently wastes class time preaching about issues that in no way relate to the class. It's his way or no way.

Jack Yates is the worst professor at UNI!!!! He is arrogant, and believes his opinion is superior. I was scared to answer questions in class because I didn't want him criticizing me. Don't take research methods with him! AVOID THIS PROFESSOR LIKE THE PLAUGE!!!!!!!

Quite a bit of work outside of class, but he spaces it out so it's manageable as long as the rest of your course load isn't crazy. Also for part of your research you can work with other people to collect articles if you want. Hes opinionated about current events but a fair grader. Textbooks are definitely helpful but you can eek by without them.

Narrow-minded and can be rude. His way or no way. Really hard but ends up grading better than he teaches!

Yates is a funny guy. He is very liberal and open about it. It's best to accept his views without contradiction because if you don't agree with him, you'll get on his bad side, which is not a place to be. Otherwise, a pretty decent guy. Class isn't bad--study for tests. He's fair on grades and very understanding of most situations.

Not helpful! Makes research methods harder than it is. Makes you feel stupid if you don't understand his class. Spends a lot of time on current events....that have nothing to do with the class. Likes to tell the class his liberal opinion on everything. He doesn't like it if you disagree! If you have to take RM....find another instructor!

This was the only teacher I had all semster I didn't like. He spends half the class going over current news that has nothing to do with the class and going over his liberal views. I could care less about his views but don't want him to tell what I should think. He is often disorganized and I never feel like I'm learning anything useful.

I took RM and memory and Language with him and I never knew what was expected. There was little to no structure to his classes. He wasted about 5-10 minutes every day talking about "what's in the news" where he would only talk about public policy and stress his very liberal views. Nothing learned really stuck, and classes were horribly boring.

Yates is an excellent professor, and you must work hard to succeed, but you will learn so much. He walks you through the process, and makes the research project very doable compared to the other RM instructors from what I hear. Take notes, work hard, study hard. Value education!

Prof. Yates is rigid and inflexible in his teaching style. Not surprising that he thinks he is a "know it all"! He can make your life difficult if you have views contrary to his. Avoid this class- it is not worth the time and aggrivation.

Dr. Yates was a great teacher. The class itself is kind of boring because the material isn't great. But he is extremely understanding. I had a 3 surgeries that semester so I missed a lot of class but he was always more than willing to help me stay caught up.

Research & Methods with Yates was very time consuming, lots of work but he does guide you through it. He also makes you discuss current events in the beginning of every class...so if you don't like that or HIS LIBERAL views, then maybe he's not for you. It is not an easy A but if you want an A and are committed to doing well, you can.

The class was not all that fun. It was a long class to attend 4 days a week. The bibliography was a lot of research, and the portfolio was a little easier. If you have any questions, ask Yates! Not a lot of reading, just piddly work that you don't think will help in the end. Take notes as much as possible, and go to every class.
