Prof Pettey is a very knowledgeable man and you will learn a lot, but he is not a respectful person. He is arrogant and likes to remind you that he knows more than you. He is intimidating - if you miss 2 classes he will drop you from the course! He doesn't upload grades onto D2L during the semester and your grade is dependent on just a few tests!

Arrogant dinosaur of a prof. Teaching style is archaic. Relentlessly graded on a handful of assignments. He stresses this is a discussion class but you can't get more than 2 words in & he shuts down anyone he feels talks too much or whose opinion isn't in line with his own. I've never gotten less than a A in any English class except this one

I've heard that he was a really tough teacher, however, I have had no issues with him. He is tough, but if you pay attention to his lectures, take good notes, and study, then you will pass easily. If you show you care, then he will go easy on you. I definitely learned a lot from him.

Hes a good teacher, in general. Wants you to learn. But he acts chill, like he doesnt really care what grade you get its all graded on improvement. But my final grade doesnt agree with that mentality. I was constantly asking for help and he was just like oh youll be fine. Plus hes kinda arrogant. Take this class if you have time for it.

He is absolutly horrid. Only half of what he goes over is on quizzes and none is on the tests. He expects you to know everything he speant YEARS learning.

Quizzes and exams are about character names and details of the text, which ends up being tedious -- little to no opportunity to analyze/discuss the texts. Lecture heavy, seemingly encourages participation but never lets students finish an idea. Really wants to be intimidating and is arrogant. I didn't learn much since it was all name memorization.

This upcoming semester will be my third class by Pettey. Don't make the mistake of thinking he's an easy professor, because he's the toughest professor I've had, but I've also learned more from him than any teacher I've ever had. He's hilarious if you pay attention in class and do your work. Show effort and he will help you when you need it.

He was the first english teacher I had in the University, not counting those MFA TA's, and he set the bar quite high. Since his class I have had other professors, and most of them weren't very good. If you want to learn. If you want to explore. If you want to feel successful and good about yourself, then take Dr. Pettey's class. It's worth it.

Pettey is probably one of the best teachers at UA. He doesn't take crap from anyone which is refreshing. If you are an English major I highly recommend taking his class. He made me love English. He is so wise and smart and sometimes he says some of the most beautiful things about a work. This makes him kinda hot too in a smart old man kinda way.

The best classes I took in college were taught by this man. He's brilliant and challenges you in ways you never thought possible. The only way to do well in his class is read the material, never be late, visit his office hours, and act like you genuinely care. His humor and sarcasm is kinda hot. He knows when you're bsing so don't do that.

Dr. Pettey doesn't mess around. His classes are not easy and he may come off as harsh at first, but just do the work and be respectful, it's all he asks for. I actually learned more from him than any other teacher in the department

At first I could not STAND Dr. Pettey. I thought he was cold and arrogant. After a full semester and many office hour visits, I adore him. I have never learned this much in a class before. He is a wonderful man, if you respect him and take the class seriously. Go to office hours, attend every class session, do the work, and you will be fine!

I am currently taking my 3rd class with Dr. Pettey because I get my money's worth. It is not easy by any means. In fact, it's pretty damn hard, but I have learned more from him than from any other instructor. He is reasonable as long as you are respectful and communicative.

Dr. Pettey is extremely intelligent. He is almost as intelligent as he is mean spirited. He will present a morass of formalist/Freudian details but is unable to provide any real insight into the human condition because his meanness renders him incapable of achieving a big picture viewpoint.

Great professor! He might come off like a hard ass in class, but in his office hours he's a really nice guy. He is very helpful, but you have to meet him halfway. If you do the reading, watch the movies and study then you will do fine. His class is hard, but you'll learn more about film than in any other film class.

Nice to see Dr. Pettey is still around; I took Humanities courses from him back in the 90s. I agree with what many here have said: he doesn't put up with any shenanigans. He threw some guy out of class for asking his neighbor whether he'd missed anything the previous session, at which he was not present. Scathing scorn, to say the least. Great prof

Basically, you get EXACTLY what you put in with Pettey. He doesn't take sh** from anybody which means if you want an easy class don't waste your time. The class is certainly difficult, but you will learn more about film than in many of the other classes offered. Hes a great teacher and means well but doesn't mess around, period.

Difficult class, you've definitely got to put a lot of work into it to do well. Pettey expects the best out of his students and doesn't respect those who don't put their best effort forth. Definitely a professor who is worth impressing by putting out an extra effort.
