He genuinely cares about student-learning, and pushes our thinking beyond our comfort zone. He is one of the best professors I've ever had! I would recommend. If you do the work, he can help your work reach the next level.

Took Senior Seminar with Ben. He knows his stuff and is a fair grader. He can get behind in grading because he's really busy. He adjusted the syllabus a lot because he or the class got behind, but he's flexible and laid back. Has some weird opinions/viewpoints, but is repsectful of others. Reading for the course wasn't great.

Dr. Olguin really knows the subject matter. His quizzes are rather easy, and are open book. He's pretty open to different points of view and interpretations of the works assigned, in fact, he encourages it.

Really great professor. A little abrupt at first but eventually warms up. Motivates students to think outside of their comfort zones and own their ideas. Classes are mainly discussions so come prepared because he'll call on you. Doesn't cast judgments, really open to all opinions and contributions to discussions.

One of the best classes I have taken thus far with a genuinely engaging and interested teacher. This is not your average traditional, boring class. Its focused on holistic teaching and learning. Its not always about the grade, its about the experience! Wonderful text, laid back and easy to work with! Best decision I made this semester.

This professor rocks! He expects you to be in class and you MUST have your textbook. I liked his teaching style because he didn't give boring lectures. It was more like the class just sitting around chatting. VERY fair if you show up and give an opinion as well as standing behind it.

Great professor. Heavy reading load, but then again, this was a 3 week course. Read the text, show up to class, and back up your opinion on the tests and you're set. Recommended for all Engliah majors.

This professor is more interested in himself and his accomplishments than he is in teaching english. He is egotistical to the max and takes pleasure in degrading and humiliating those that do not share his views. The class is an easy A, but the cost to self esteem is too high.

This was a demanding course because of the heavy reading load but it was the best literature course I ever took. I really loved the professor's passion. He made my worse subject into my new favorite subject. If you take his course be prepared to do a lot of reading, but it will be worth it!

I thought he was a good teacher, he shows you things that bring controversy and lets likes to hear all side of the story, he likes to play the devil's advocate just to see what you will respond. I passed his class with an A even though I missed more than 3 classes (and never did the make up work), also except fot the vocabulary words, I never did extra credit which included going to a Lit. Event and writing a paper. We were required to get about 6 books but 4 of them were less than 5 or 6 dollars.

Dr. Olguin is awesome. I disagree with the previous comment that his syllabus is biased. Rather, it's well-thought and comprehensive. To the poet: you're mad b/c you probably just didn't get it. Go read some critical theory. Run!

Avoid if you are interested in an unbiased treatment of literature. Take if you are interested in the art of blaming one group for the misfortunes of another. Or better yet, take a sociology or history class.

Disregarding the comments about the way he teaches his English classes, he is very knowledgable about Mexican American Studies. I took his class DT, and he made the class very interesting and fun.
