Comment:
In my opinion, Underhill is a top-notch professor. (I may be biased since I'm a grad student). He's brilliant and has a passion for his field. He is humorous and relatable. As I said, I'm a grad student so it is sort of presumed that you do the heavy-duty work at home, while class serves specific functions like showing off your knowledge.

Dr. Underhill knows his subject and has perfected a streamlined class that requires students to stretch to get answers. If you do the reading, go to class, and pay attention, you will learn and understand a lot about linguistics. If you're going to college for knowledge, it's a great class. If you're just floating, in this class you'll sink.

If you are matriculating from a public school, especially one in CA, you will not be prepared for this professor's style. It's disturbing how many students complain about this man and don't do well in his class. I was never afraid to ask questions because I studied and asked pertinent questions. The low quality of the students is the problem.

This is a difficult class! He belittles you when he calls on you and you have the wrong answer and instead of him helping you he gets upset because you don't understand. HW every week, readings, and hard written exams.

Underhill has somewhat of a sense of humor. That is it. Not helpful, laughs at wrong answers, and doesnt care if no one understands. HW, quizes, and final are VERY hard! Look online for help on hw. Be ready to give answers in class when he calls on you. Try your best, cross your fingers, and hopefully you will pass.

I really liked this teacher. Yes he is a little old and hard of hearing but he cracks some funny jokes and if you show up, respect him, and do the homework you'll learn alot. I did. well actually I missed alot of homework but I liked the class. Fun.

I am writing because I feel sorry for professor U after all the negative comments. He is nice enough. He is old and can't hear you very well. He wears pretty cool clothes-- I especially like his leaf-green polyester pants and short-sleeve button-up shirts. His lectures can be a bit boring, but he is not a bad professor or a bad person.

Its a very difficult class. Don't take it if you have any other options. If you do take it go to the linguistic dept and ask for tutoring early on.

DO NoT TAKe THIs MAn! Unless you are a hardcore linguistics major do not even attemp it. (Ling majors will love him though) Very boring teaching style and unless you can tell him what he wants to hear or ask him what he wants to answere you will find difficulty communicating with him, even in office hour. Good luck if you have not choice but him.

Very difficult and time consuming class. Seriously frightens unsure or non-studious people, but if you're not relying on a prof to boost your ego I don't see a problem. Helpful during office hours if you've already put in the effort and have clear questions to specific difficulties. Witty. Usually a 4.0 student, will probably get a C/B at best.

Worst teacher I have EVER had. Seriously, DO NOT take his class - you'll regret it. One of the crankiest, most insensitive people I've ever encountered! Barely teaches, just goes over hw. Don't be surprised if you spend 2 hours doing the hw and then get it back w/ a score of 2/5 and comments like "missing the point" or "no, you don't understand."

AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! He is simply the worst prof. I have ever had! He seems to hate evryone and everything around him. Enjoys demoralizing students and make them feel lowere than dirt. He should NOT be teaching! ( I got an A in his class BUT I would NEVER reccomend him to anyone!)

Boring, self-contradictory, unsympathetic. Can be funny, but just another teacher who seems to think that since he's tenured he doesn't have to teach. Relies on readings and uses all of class to go over the homework after he’s taken it and belittle people for wrong answers. Avoid if possible! (possibly take phonology through the speech department)

This teacher very misunderstood by a lot of people. He's not a bad person, he is a little weird and has corny jokes, but he's the prototype for a college professor. Do the reading and you'll pass the class. Midterm and Final are mostly essay questions... know how to bulls*** and youre in.

If you are the kind of person who feels better about themselves when the prof. destroys other, less gifted students in front of the whole class, this is the one for you. He has not updated his notes in 10 years and is WAY behind current research. A waste of time for advanced students and demoralizing for those who need help.

very unhelpful. dehumanizes and demoralizes students in office hour. humiliates students in class. refuses to answere questions in class. if you challange him, he will do everything he can to crush you in the class. teaches way above the 101 level, freshman beware, and if you do take him (god help you) dont drop out of college for him, some have!!!

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! or this class at that. he will not help you and will humiliate you in class. he won't respond to any of your emails asking for help. he wears green pants every day along with his 50 year old shirts. don't take this for an easy a, because you won't get one. his tests are raondom and hard. he is a very hard grader!

Comment:
A bit eccentric, but genuinely interested in helping students. If you take the class seriously he will take you seriously. He is also very helpful during office hours. If you say annoying things in class or ask stupid questions he will just ignore you. Show a genuine interest for the subject and he will be an engaging and helpful professor.
