Dr. Butts is easily my fav prof at App. This class will need to be your # 1 priority and the focus of all your time for a semester. This is the hardest lab I have ever taken, the lecture and writing portions are tough too. Butts realizes the difficulty and requires everyone to meet him 1 on 1 so they feel comfortable approaching him with questions

This class was amazing. I had a lot of fun learning in this class. Lab is not hard, if you study appropriately; I would recommend 3-4 hours per week in lab (outside of normal lab time). Study with other classmates for lab! makes it a whole lot easier when it comes time for a practical.

This is a great teacher. he is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. If you didn't like the class, you probably just dont like to study. TAKE PICTURES IN LAB!!!!

The lecture exams are easy, especially the final. He posts old exams, and then reuses most of the questions. Lab is DIFFICULT! I recommend taking pics and then making flashcards out of them. Study A LOT! I ended up with an A-, but I spent HOURS studying. If you put in the time, its not too terrible.

His teaching style is learner centered (as it should be) and effectively weeds out the students who have NO BUSINESS GOING INTO BIOLOGY. His was the most difficult class of my ENTIRE academic career (grad school included) and probably one of my best classes ever. This man is an excellent COLLEGE PROFESSOR.

This class, especially the lab, is one of the more difficult classes I've ever taken - but I assure you that it's worth every minute. Prepare to memorize species names until your eyes burn, but you'll thank him afterwards for everything you learned.

I failed this class the first time around. I took it again and got an A. You have to study a lot. I studied in the lab probably at least 3 hours per week and much longer if it was time for a practical. Also, get a hold of previous tests lecture tests...huge help. And take pictures in lab, that also helps a lot.

Dr. Butts is a very nice man. That's the end of the good. His tests for Comp Vert are extremely difficult and his lab exams are worse. His teaching style is ancient and he doesn't post the Powerpoints online. If you want to maintain a high GPA and graduate on time avoid him. His class has to be the only one you focus on.

HARDEST TEACHER I've ever taken. His lecture tests aren't too bad, they are like any other lecture course. However, his lab exams are KILLER. Zoology was my life the entire semester and I still have to retake it. He is a really great guy though. Good luck if you have to take this class!

I learned so much more in this class than any I've ever taken. The lecture isn't hard at all, like everyone says, just study old exams and you'll do fine. The lab however is something you HAVE to put a lot of effort into to get a decent grade. Start studying early bc it'll pile up. But overall if I had to do it again I would, Dr. Butts is great.

He is very passionate about what he teaches and is easy to listen to (although attendance is not mandatory). Class tests aren't very hard - get old tests to study and you'll be fine. Lab tests are CRAZY hard and a ton of memorization. He is very stuck in his ways and will not compromise. Doesn't give +/- grades, I deserved a B+ and got a B.

Dr. Butts is the man. He's very old school but has a passion for what he teaches. His powerpoints are clear and his tests are from the textbook/powerpoint. Go to class and get your hands on some tests from previous years and you'll be fine. The lab is harder than the lecture but its all memorization. A good class.

Very clear, very easy to understand. The tests often deal with minutia, so are more about memorization than comprehension/concepts, but still explains some fairly boring things in a very entertaining way.

Comparative Vert...the most demanding course I've ever taken. Tests are short answer/essay, 2 group papers and 3 lab practicals that would scare the hell out of anyone but Dr. Butts. He's a great professor though. Just be prepared to work your butt off. I made a B, and I've never been so proud to make a B in my life. Intersting class. Take it!

The hardest class I have ever taken!! I loved the class, Dr. Butts is very interesting, and very willing to help. As long as you keep up with the class and study you will do great (tape recorders are the best!) I made a A on everything except for the 1st test and even that was a high B. So this class is very do able.

Was introduced to his rigid style in Zoo lab, then took him for Comparative vert. Very hard class, you have to do more than just take notes... He is an extremeley effective instructor and will teach you a ton! Wish I could hold it all in my brain! His courses will prepare you for life. Highly suggested if you want to learn.

You must study, and the class is difficult. The lab is much more difficult, though. Overall, you will learn a lot if you put in the effort, and I found his class interesting.
