Participation is key in this class. Some students participate voluntarily and others were picked on to participate. He allows re-writes to improve assigned papers. However, his feedback and grading style was confusing.

I enjoyed his class. At first he gave me a hard time ,but I still stuck through and persevered through it. I used the feedback back he gave me to write better essays and im thankful for that. Once I showed him that I was really putting in the effort it made the rest of the semester much easier. You have to be prepared and be willing to participate

Had him back in the spring, I sucked at writing my papers but he made me pay close attention to where I messed up, and it really brought my GPA up. You just gotta pay attention to every detail and compare and contrast ideas back to each other. I highly recommend.

He's passionate about what he's teaching. There is the journal thing and make sure you have questions and ideas you can articulate well in class. He can be rather harsh in his questioning at times (most times), but he's not unbearable. Just not personable. Make sure you can hold your own. He's certainly not the right guy for the thin-skinned.

Givant is a bit of a controversial choice. His methods of grading are strange at best and bizarre and arcane at worst. However, his is one of the most interesting and even inspirational professors on campus. Go to his office hours and talk to him. About anything. He can and will help you, and you even might get some free books along the way.

He's a very smart thinker, but you have to actually speak in class or he will call on you randomly. An FYI for quiet students. Please don't show up to class without reading the articles he assigns or he will chew you up in front of the class then spit you out to advising so you can withdraw lol. He's a good man and offers essay revisions.

Very tough grader but he is willing to take revised essays if youre not happy with your grade. He would call on me for my opinion on what we read every class and would make me feel stupid then at the end of the semester he gives you a little review and told me he "always expected an intelligent response from me" very confusing. But he is helpful

I took him back in Spring 2012. I miss his class. He set off something in me that he normally does with most students. He sets off your comfortable thoughts and values and makes you question everything. I've never stopped questioning since. Don't take for an easy A,take it because you want to know what learning is really aboutSocrates reincarnated

Givant taught hard classes, but was an amazing teacher. How is learning philosophy easy, how will anything interested be easy? With enough time put in and direct questions you can make it through his classes. I worked hard and got a B and normally I get A's. It's just what happened. Take his class, I got a lot more out of it than a grade.

Professor Givant is extremely hard. He wants your papers to be his way or no way. He grades your journals at the end of the semester. Every class you will receive homework and the stories are discussed in class. He makes you express how you feel about eveything we talk about in class and will kick you out if un prepared

This man is a cultural icon that everyone attending SUNY Orange should take within seconds of getting accepted. He lets you rewrite papers as many times as you want, and is very helpful with everything you ask him. Great professor, great man. LET BDJ LIVE ON!

I had Professor Givant for Philosophy and Freshman English 102, back in 1999. He had two rules to his classes, read the material and have an opinion. If you do the work and are not intimated by the man, and are confident enough to give him back "some of his own," you will learn. College is hard, I would suggest less whining and more working.

I took Professor Givant for Philosophy and I wish I hadn't. He is an interesting character, but can be extremely grumpy and mean. I was always afraid to speak out during class because he has a tendency to spit your words back in your face, and he gets a kick out of putting students down. He's also a SUPER hard grader and loves to give out F's!

This is not a class for the lighthearted. You must be willing to DO THE WORK and use your brain. There is no slacking or half assed work. He's brilliant. Don't come unprepared! More of a Lit/Philosophy hybrid class. Hard grader but willing to help prior to hand in. Very intimidating, deceptively approachable.

AVOID this class. Grading is impossible. Almost the entire class got C-, D, or F on first essay. Puts students down. Completely disrespects you. Raise your hand a lot and say what he wants to hear. The only person I know to get above a "C" on a paper did just that. Seems like subjective grading. No standards given on how we are graded: his opinion.

All I can say is I never agreed with anything he said and for that he despised me! I pay my money so I have the right to speak my mind but he wanted none of it! To make it even more clear just be ultra liberal, agree with abortion and health care and every thing else that liberals live for and you will be loved and you will pass. Worst teacher ever
