Comment:
This class was extremely theory driven and taught me nothing about learning disabilities or how to help those with LD in the classroom. The readings were disconnected and not helpful for assignments. The text book is dense, hard to read and not very applicable. I don't know about the professor, but the course itself was disappointing.

Dr. Hoskyn is a very caring professor. She really cares about supporting her students and scaffolding their learning. She organized our grad class around very useful peer reviewed sessions from which we learned a lot. Though it meant so much extra work for her, she gave us feedback on multiple stages of our essay writing. She is a wonderful prof.

I reccomend taking this in person It was content heavy but,I did find collaborating with group members helpful. The midterm and the final were all written questions (short answer and an essay) HOWEVER, we were allowed to bring the textbook each time and bring in one page of notes double sided. The TM was alright but took weeks to mark assignments.

horrible student-supervisor experience. I was Maureen's masters students a couple of years ago she used to have pleasure undermining me and criticizing me. She is scattered and forgets what she says and the inconsistency made me spend 4 plus years with her doing my master.

She needs to revise the 422 course content and materialboth for in-class and online. Assignment requirements are unclear, APA format requirements are wrong (come on; 1.5 spacing?), and the textbook is so incomprehensible and theory-filled that it is not practical at all. The readings for an assignment do not give the necessary information.

Most of the ratings on here have to do with the online classes, which she has nothing to do with (other than creating the content). Take her classes in person! She's friendly, understanding, and welcomes feedback about assignments.

In terms of IN CLASS courses, Professor Hoskyn was great. She was very understanding when it came to student feedback on assignments, tests, & readings. If something was unappealing, she took students' responses into consideration & altered the assignments. Overall, tests were very long & make sure you explain in detail and support your claims.

For all the reviews I'm reading about taking this class online- do not do it! I have taken both 315 and 422 with Maureen in class and she is extremely accommodating. If you tell her that a concept is too difficult, she'll scrap it completely from the exam. Also, if you ask her for an extension for a paper she will most likely give it to you!

Comment:
For the 315 online course, it was my first online class at SFU so I made sure I never fell behind (in fact ahead for once). As long as you put effort into the assignments every week, the final shouldn't be as intimidating. I actually got a really good mark this way... The final I needed the 3hr. Who cares about instructor not being present?

People shouldn't blame her this much because SFU just puts a prof's name on SIS to make the course look legitimate & it's not the prof's responsibility to teach an online class.. If you have any course to take with her, take it IN-CLASS. She is kind and helpful. You will hear a lot of interesting information relevant to Special Education.

Pointless name as she has not even one percent input in the course, the course is run by TM who is evading, vague and unsure. No clue about what to expect in the written exam. Useless and disappointing. It took me three hours to attempt half of the exam in the open book as it was totally unexpected. There was nothing from what we did for 13 weeks:(

There's isn't much I can add that hasn't already been said, scroll down and read the other comments because it's all true. I don't understand what her role is anyways, you never hear from her and it's always the TA that you're communicating with an marking everything. The instructions are SO unclear and vague for assignments, it's ridiculous.

Comment:
This course was a lot of work. There was no interaction with the instructor and the TA had a habit of delivering snobby, cutting comments. The marking for the tutoring assignment did not align with the course rubric. Exams were essay written. Class average on the exams was brutal 50-60%. If you are looking for an elective do not take this course!

This course really didn't teach me anything that I hadn't already learned in EDUC 315. This course was much less engaging, the exams were extremely difficult and focused on memorizing specific, small details from the texts. Very disappointed. Assignments are slightly more interesting, but exams are brutal. Don't take this if you can avoid it.

I took this class and never heard from the prof at all! The TA instructs you on what to do and helps with questions. More than 60% of the mark is based on an app review, you reflect on some, you create your own review with a script/storyboard/video! I thought it was pointless. Weekly discussions are mandatory :( not a fun or easy course

Was interested in the course prior to taking it. In the end it was of little use when it came to application in a teaching setting. EASY marking by the TA and ZERO input/interaction with Prof until she clarified the expectation of the exam 48 hours before writing the final. Prof was not available at exam time for clarification on an exam question.

I took this course via DE and it is a lot of work for 3 credits. There's a discrepancy between readings and assignments. Don't expect to interact with the instructor too much as most feedback will be from the TA. I have taken a course with Maureen prior and she is a very sweet lady. Despite the negative ratings, I would definitely recommend her.

Two 500 word assignments, a MT, final, & a paper based off tutoring a child with disabilities 6x. Do everything you're told to for the assignments & write a good paper, because the exams are tricky & all short answer. If you succeed on the assignments/discussions there's less pressure for the difficult exams!

Comment:
Completely disorganized course, textbook, course material and assignments do not align. Group discussions often changed last minute due to content not actually working, the assignment deadlines were unorganized and overall it was poorly administrated. Content itself was useless, in spite of my high interest in the subject.

A totally disorganized course lacking cohesion. Assignments oftentimes not corresponding assigned readings. Late responses and marking from our TA. The textbook was alright, although theories in it seemed quite outdated.
