horrible professor! he doesnt care about teaching or his students AT ALL (dont try to email him ever he wont respond). The course notes are useless. They are just diagrams and NO words. You MUST attend every lecture to fill them out and write down everything he says. This class is only offered at 8:30am too so beware! 1st yrs dont take this class!!

Barton is really passionate about zoology and it shows while he is teaching. The course notes are very incomplete, but it is not hard to write down the important things during the lecture. This is his last term before retirement so I'm not sure how helpful these comments are...

GET USED TO THE TERMINOLOGY. Go to lectures because you don't cover everything in the text. Take notes by phylum and know the special characteristics of each one because you'll have to compare on the lecture final. Lab final is hard, try to take pictures of dissections during labs if you can - knowing what it is is more important than functions.

Great prof and very nice. He understands your situation and try to help. His notes are your exam reference everything he says could be on the exams even if it's not on the book which keep you intersted in the lecture

Dr. Barton is a huge bro! His class is interesting -he tells stories of his adventures off in Jamaica and places like that before diving into each phylum. His course notes are a great way to study and they keep you honest -if you come to lecture, you just fill in the blanks and write down some notes of what he says, you'll be fine. Great guy!

The lab t.a is really good! The lab exam sucks! No Mc, a bunch of slide show for lab exam and u need to know all the spellingof the terms! No homeworks just hard exams!

Brutal prof. Sweet guy, interesting and all....but seriously, the course notes are the most unhelpful thing in the world. He also is really super unhelpful in helping us create them/ fill them out. Worst biology class I've ever been in.

Prof knows what he's doing, but has no empathy for students' sleep time in the morning (you'll never find this class offered anytime beside 8:30am. - BRUTAL!) Lab was fun. Final exam raped everyone HARD. Worst final exam I ever had to writte in UW.

Arthropod Zoology was AMAZING! His stories of each order that we examined were VERY interesting and the lab was cool too, seeing actual specimens. Course was 2 midterms (Bell-Ringer style), a 3 page paper, and a final. AWESOME course - and you can take it even if you don't have the prereq; he overrided it for many people.

Comment:
At first the lab quizzes seemed alright, but the final exam is total annihilation. Some of the pictures on the lab exam were ones never seen before, not representative of what was studied. Midterm was fair, final was more difficult and can be quite tricky as it requires distinguishing similar characteristics between phylums. Study hard for the lab.

Barton is AWESOME! He is a wonderful lecturer who never lets his classes get boring, filling his lectures with enthusiasm, interest, and first hand-experience. My FAVOURITE biology class so far, and i'm in 3rd year! More profs should be like him at UW, and there certainly should be more zoology/taxonomy courses offered than there are (very little)!

He's not very accommodating to students' needs and appears to be one of those profs who's more focused on research than students. Overall the class was interesting but hard and just be warned, he tends to test on obscure facts. Make sure you know the content inside and out before the midterm and exam.

Barton is such a nice guy!!! Honestly, he loves what he does, he supports student organizations, and will most certainly help his students. I've have gained so much knowledge without trying. The Labs are Fab, his lectures a bit dry, tests ok, lab final u need to study for!!! Take this in your second year or higher.

A very bitter man. He is uncomfortable with dealing with people who do not have a pHD. I took zoology in third year and got 80%. I don't know how first years pass this class.

Very knowledgable, and expects a lot from his students. Fair tests, though hard. This class was a lot of work but was very rewarding in the end. Work hard, keep up with work and you will like Dr. Barton. Dry humour, doesn't smile much. Sometimes hard to stay awake. Overall, he's a good prof.

This professor was very clear and helpful within lectures, he was able to keep the class interested and would often tell us about the times he would study the organisms we were learning about. the term test and the exam were fair.
