Comment:
I think his years of experience far outweigh any minor problem that might come up with his teaching habits. I thought he was an exceptional teacher and I even liked picking on him a little bit [hint: if you ever take his class, make a "mean" remark about his age and see what happens. I have to tell you I had some good laughs with him.].

Comment:
Great teacher overall. Lets you come into class 30 minutes early and 30 minutes after class to ask questions or just to hear a few jokes. Helps you through any problem you can't do. Expects you to read the book before class which is a great way to get an A. Very funny guy and relaxed. The people who said he was a terrible teacher suck at calculus.

Comment:
Sparlin isn't the most intensive of teachers. He won't walk you through each problem, and expects you to be intelligent and work things out yourself unless directly asked. But, with a good sense of humor and almost constant availability, he's one of the more chill teachers at S&T.

Comment:
Avoid Sparlin like the plague... Actually avoid Calc 3 at MS&T altogether. Sparlin's teaching style is to sit at his desk, read you the problems, and suggest how to do them. No lecture, just reads straight from the homework. If you want to do well, switch to a professor like Leach.

Dr. Sparlin is downright one of the worst professors I have ever had the misfortune of "learning" from. Expect to get talked down to for not having the next 3 tests' crib sheets done on day 2 of class. He killed my 4.0.

He seems really nice, but he is a worthless teacher. He doesn't know the subject matter well, he rarely works out GOOD examples and he often miss leads you on the difficulty of the problems. He relates everything to food, this is not helpful and it just makes you hungry.

THE GOOD: Very lenient grader, easy tests and quizzes, and he's a funny guy with a great personality. He's a bro. THE BAD: His lectures are just about worthless. He expects you to read the book before coming to class, and then he just does formula derivations and other trivial things on the board. Expect to be teaching yourself outside of class.

Don Sparlin is the single worst teacher I have ever had. He cannot teach. He frequently makes mistakes and refuses to correct them. On one occasion, we corrected him for an error he had made and he threw a tantrum-he yelled at students, insulted them, and eventually threw people out of class. Do not take Sparlin. If you get him, drop the class.

Funny, but almost completely useless when it comes to teaching Calc. Granted, he's a physics teacher, but come on! Most of the time he can't even do the homework questions in class. Gives you a general overview of the material and excepts you to learn everything of importance on your own... which means you'll bomb the tests. Class average: 62%

He didn't really seem interested in teaching Calc. Expected 100% perfect behavior from the ENTIRE class. On the good side, he has an amazing TA.

STAY AWAY from Sparlin for anybody who doesn't grasp Math well on their own. He doesn't lecture, he just hands out worksheets and expects you to read the book. If he does lecture, beware, he makes more mistakes than Kim Kinder. He's a funny guy, and a really easy grader; but he's been retired for almost 10 years and needs to stick to Polka.

This is a very interesting guy with a fun sense of humor. However, he doesn't seem to have much interest in helping students, and doesn't tend to go out of his way to make sure the material is understood.

I dropped his class two summers ago because he didn't teach - he expected us to magically know physics. I did just FINE that fall b/c I was taught the material even though he said it wouldn't be easier. Suprise! It was easier taking it in the fall with everything else than sitting through 8 long weeks with him in the summer!

If you get his sense of humor, you'll get some laughs out of him. He's a decent teacher. He made the final for Math 8 last semester and it was really easy. He also reads these. Hi Dr. Sparlin.
