Comment:
Grades subjectively. While he is a nice guy, I felt a little lost going through the material. He grades based on how much he likes you, not really on how well the programs went. He is going to retire after this semester.

Not a terrible professor but group project would have been tough and hard to understand if I hadn't taken CS 474 first. He's a really nice guy just doesn't explain things very well. Three tests that aren't very hard if you fill out his study guides, and there's a homework assignment per week that usually takes two to three hours.

Grove is excellent for an introductory class. If you ever need help, don't be afraid to ask. He will never turn you away. Just be aware that for exams you are limited to DrJava as your only IDE, so start to get used to that. Other than that, attend every class. The weekly routine is awesome too. Mon. are lectures, Wed. activity, and Fri. labs.

Comment:
Wouldn't take Grove again. Lecture was boring, power points every class. Participation req'd in activities and labs. Graded projects on how much he liked the student and not actual material turned in. Ass gave the final exam during regular class period, screwing everyone out of having adequate time to take exam. Exams weighted too heavily, 50%.

Comment:
Lectures are essentially optional, but activities are mandatory attendance. I recommend going to class for the labs and for lectures. Both of them give much more concrete understanding of the material, which is especially helpful come exams. Absolutely get the textbook (if you don't have it from 139). Definitely recommend the newest addition.

Terrible teacher, if you don't know the programming languages he wants you to use for labs he assigns you're going to have a terrible time with him. Don't recommend unless you want to go insane. I almost stopped my computer science studies because of him.

Grove is an excellent teacher! Very straightforward in his teaching style. Normally we would have a lecture on Monday, group project on Wednesday and Lab on Friday. 3 Exams (inc. Final), if you learn the study guide you will ace the Exams! Always start on PA's early!

Grove is a great professor and really knows his stuff, but this class is hard. There are a total of 4 tests and roughly 18 quizzes. Come to class or you will fail.

He is a nice guy but he wasn't the best. Very tough grader and doesn't provide enough information about assignments and exams. Don't recommend!

I don't know whats up with the good comments but he wasn't really the best! He grades on individual assignments harshly and the same goes with the test. I wouldn't recommend him if you're a CS major!

A nice guy, an interesting class but sometimes you have to scramble to make the project deadlines. Just do your homework and fill out your gantt charts properly and you will be fine. Grading on projects seems arbitrary and little feedback is given.

Dr. Grove is a nice guy and a very competent professor. Lectures and labs were fresh. The project was fun and I learned a lot. Expect to do a lot of programming. If you don't mind that aspect, it's a pretty easy class.

Grades homeworks very easily. Project is pretty intense - plan early! Mid-term and Final exams are pretty tough too, don't let his easy grading on homeworks fool you on the exams. Very nice, approachable, and helpful though. Recommended

The class was impossible at first, but he's the best grader I've run in to in the CS department. Very helpful, loves his students and his job and makes it obvious.

All in all, pretty average. No real negatives, but can't imagine ever searching him out specifically when registering in the future. Class is neither especially hard or easy. Not a whole lot of assigned work, but semester project requires many hours outside of class. As a whole, very vanilla - gets the job done, but little in terms of excitement.

I'll just say that he seems like a nice guy, but don't be fooled. He's not very compromising when it comes to requests. He'll answer questions and such, but on more than one occassion we requested a simple suggestion that he immediately disregarded. He's also overly anal about the 'honor code'. Just be perfect and you'll be fine.

AWESOME TEACHER! Kind of boring teaching style but you understand everything! He does require a lot of work (programming assignments) but its worth it because you come out of the class knowing 200x more than you came into it with. Tests are straight forward, just read, do the little HW and pass!
