Fine class, no issue with amount of reading required, hw, or tests. But a warning that if your views differ from his, you will get docked... Had to fight for every point in the class. Rewrite several papers, just do get a satisfacory grade. Essentially the only thing you will learn is that statistics are not accurate.

Great prof during class. Promotes thoughtful discussion among his students and makes you defend your arguments. Biggest problem is his grading. He will NOT give you the grade that YOU EARN. He will give you the grade he feels you deserve. Go to class or you will guaranteed fail. Workload isn't unreasonable.

3 texts, all used equally and all were tested on. Hynes keeps his lectures pretty interesting, but when it comes to grading, he will grade against you if your opinions do not reflect his own. I took notes of his views all term and based my final essays/exams off of them and got pretty decent grades. Best of all Intro to Soc. Sci. professors.

Great professor if you enjoy meaningful discussion. Wants students to do well and will help them achieve it. I would choose him over any other SoSci Professor any day. Grades low-medium difficulty, imo. Just make sure he knows you care and are interested.

Doesn't outline his expectations well. Pop quizzes randomly on assigned topics on assigned readings, usually very specific. Topic for final paper won't get approved unless it's incredibly specific. Grading is very subjective, and does not fit the guidelines given after the paper is graded and returned. Avoid at all costs

worst professor ever! hard grader, got 0 communication skills, will not stop talking, will not offer after-the-class help even if you ask for it. I would prefer getting analy ****ed to attending his lectures

He is the worst professor I have ever had, cannot teach for****. He could probably use a communication course, keeps yaking all the time. what tops is all is that he does not care at all. He does not like the idea of after-th-class help. Oh yeah! and he loves to grade hard. One of these days he is going get punched hard and it will be my knuckles

He keeps the classes interesting with controversial discussions. Think before you pick a side in a argument and he'll like you. Make sure you read because there will normally be a quiz on something obscure from the reading.

Good prof for Senior Seminar. Actually does a decent job of promoting critical thinking skills and logic- helps you question and better understand situations contrary to usual perception tendencies. Warning: Pick a precise topic for your term paper, or else he will GIVE you one-however you WILL learn from it. Must READ EVERYTHING before each class.

From what I hear, he is the best professor for this class. There is a fair amount of reading involved, but it isn't difficult. The 2 small essays are easy to write. The final paper is more difficult. Class is composed of open discussion and presentations.

Hynes is good at making a 2 hour class seem like an eternity. I'm not quite sure exactly what's going on in his head when you express an opinion but his face sure puts on a show! He's a tough grader and expects full comprehension of the given material, no matter how mind numbing it is. Be an avid writer or find another prof.

Total Irish communist. Avoid at all cost. Since when is reading 3 books about layoffs for 6 weeks studying social sciences? "Layoffs are bad, no matter what." That is the entire 11 week class. Grades hard, and you must share his opinion.

Great prof! I'd take him for all my classes, if he taught engineering. Expect a lot of work, but it's gratifying and well-worth time spent. He says few things that don't matter and actually provokes an honest argument, discussion and let's you fight it out and not necessarily intefering and injecting his views.

Expects you to take responsibilty of reading the material. Had discussion most classes. As long as you do your reading and form some opinions class is pretty easy. Just a few papers for grading.

Expects you to be responsible for material from the textbook. A very tough professor but if you are a journalist-grade writer, you can have a chance of getting grades consistently above 90. If you aren't an excellent writer you'll probably want to avoid him.

This class was not as bad I thought it would be going into it. Hynes is quite liberal but this can be used to your advantage. There was probably a slight advantage for writing in agreement with his views but in the end he was pretty fair. He grades tough but most people got bad grades b/c they never really tried.

Extremely leftist, to the point of being Marxist; regularly injects his views into the classroom. Seems to grade harder for papers that disagree with him then those that agree. Seems to make grade up because he doesn't use any no objective criteria

Tests were over the book, but the book was rarely discussed. Asked you to do a presentation which he would take over after 10min into your presentation. Material was not evenly spread out over all the tests (3rd test was over 30 chapters, 3/4 of the book). Nice guy though and willing to talk outside of class for questions.

Interesting lecturer, loves to ask you your opinion and then question it. Loves to answer questions with questions. Grading seems un structured, as if he threw a dart to determine your grade.

Comment:
Hynes isn't as bad as I thought initially. He is totally liberal but won't bash your grades if don't agree with him, just stick to the assignment. Not a bad class if you attend all the time and can write halfway decent. Lots of people do poorly because they stink at writing a good paper, not because of Hynes.
