Comment:
Dr. Smialek does a great job teaching an interesting subject, but I feel like this class was a tad difficult for a 100-level music class, which is usually only taken for gen-ed credits. In addition, there are only three tests, one quiz and a concert report and that's it! So, if you perform low on one of the exams (like I did), then it's a B at best

Dr. Smialek was great. Even though I wasn't really interested in music, I took the class for gen ed. It's a tough course, definitely not an easy A, but it is made up by the fact that Dr. Smialek is caring and a clear grader. There are definitely worse classes to take... as long as you show up, you should pass.

Very knowledgeable man. Sort of difficult class if you're not an arts major. The painting sculpture section was okay but a little dry. Music was very difficult and hard to comprehend. The film/dance section was okay but we watched too many long boring videos but overall this section was the easiest. Take perception rept. seriously can help grade

I loved Dr. Smialek. He is a really nice guy and he gives a lot of examples for each art form he teaches. He also has quite a bit of experience with each art form. I really enjoyed his stories and examples... and his dad jokes. His class is an easy A if you do study for his tests. Take the perception report paper seriously.

If you have an arts major he is a great teacher but he acts like everyone is extremely into art as much as he is. On the first day he says "you'll probably be intimidated by me because I'm a musician." All you do is take notes and have a test on what your hearing or seeing.

Easy and interesting class. While his mandatory attendance policy is annoying and he sometimes drones on past the end of class he is very approachable and gives depth to the art of music.

You have to work for your grade. Although a lot of people say it's too hard for a gen. ed I do not agree. You just have to study and be on top of things. College is not supposed to be easy!

He makes the class too time consuming for a gen ed. Between lengthy essays to his mandatory attendance policy, Smilak's class is not worth the headache for the art credit

Very difficult class if you have no musical knowledge coming in. If you don't know how to read music, you will struggle for the first few weeks. It gets easier though. The quality of the class is high, but the content is more suited to Music Majors, than a gen ed requirement. Excellent teacher, high standards.

this was my earliest class and it put me right to sleep; he talks A LOT. the tests are not difficult as long as you study. But the notes don't do anything, you need to do the online exercises for practice. overall, not very interesting but a pretty easy A.

For those of you who have seen Mad TV and the skits of that guy Rusty the weird nerd college student. Brace yourselfs because his mannerisms are almost exact. However, he teaches the material really well. As a saxophonist he should be getting into the subject matter. As for someone who likes jazz/classical the tests should actually be fun to take

Taking this class as a gen ed was torture. He is way too into the subject matter, which can become annoying. The class was easy, the tests not too hard. Don't bother buying the book, mine is still shrink-wrapped and I got an A. He is very helpful if you need it.

He's a nice guy who is very into the material, On the other hand if your taking the class as a gen-ed he can be a little too into it. I didnt use my book once and got a B- so as long as you pay attention it doesnt take much studying to get by.

If you didn't get an A in the class, then start working in a factory around town. The class is easy and his tests are easy. Everything is straightforward. The classes might be boring but you can read a book or something while your there.
