Comment:
Very slow and quiet speaker. The sound of the AC is much louder than his voice. He is not only unhelpful, but he expects half of his class to fail. When he explained this, it seemed to be a source of pride for him. I think at one time he may have been passionate about teaching, but this now seems to be as painful for him as it is for us.

Alright, No curve on the class. He really knows his stuff. He assumes if nobody asks questions you understand it (I didnt know how to ask questions really). half the class failed the mid term and he still doesnt curve. Nobody did the homework so nobody asked questions. AVOID, take it with geske if you can because geske curves a ton.

The homework programs are very easy, just don't start at the last minute. His exams are pretty difficult though and they count a lot towards your final grades. Usually closed book. You'll have to really know your stuff.

Cater is a good person and a great programmer, but he is not a good teacher. He cancelled class at least 4 times in the first 3 weeks so we had to write the programs without any knowledge of the language. He tries to help out if you have problems, but he is so experienced with coding, he is pretty impatient when you don't understand.

Very interested in the topic, very helpful in getting people to understand. Uses a language he's not familiar with, so getting through problems in the labs was rough. Nice grader, great for upper-level courses.

Had Cater for Compilers and Security. He can be lazy. Show interest, you will get a good grade. Tests are difficult, labs are hard but they SHOULD be. If you can't program and you have to take a programming class change your major.

Prof. Cater is a lot of work, but in the end, it's worth it. He is very approachable and knows the subjects well. He is prof. who will make you work, so you can't get away with half-assing it.

really long labs in java 2: two weeks each. START EARLY!!!! uses a compression curve (lower grade = bigger curve). the final is optional in many cases(depends on your grade overall). tough grader, anal when grading code, takes too much off for runtime errors in lab programs.

Very hard prof. Answers most questions with either "The answer is... I don't know" or "Try it out" I would avoid at all costs! Tests are impossible and labs are long.

"Read the book"... "You'll be tested on things we mentioned in passing"... Refused to answer decent questions our book didn't answer, only choice... know programming or "look to other sources" because he WON'T help you.

This man should be banned from teaching Java I. Long and difficult labs, and twice as many people failed the first exam than got A's. Doesn't seem to care at all about his students. Study guides are a joke.

Rumor is this guy is great for high level CS courses. His 101 class however, is very difficult. He's not lazy like they say, hes very demanding and grades hard. The curve keeps you passing, but if you need that 85 WAG for your scholarship, forget it.
