This class can be extremely confusing at first. I basically had to teach myself everything, and if I couldnt figure it out myself I went to office hours and got help. Prof Johnston can be really confusing in class, but eventually he makes things clear. Attendance boosts your grade, he gives sample exams, and usually allows retests.

I've had musical experience for 15 years including theory experience and half of this stuff he teaches is useless or made up because I've never heard of it. Smart, yes. Horrible at explaining stuff and he likes to single out students. If at all possible avoid taking him.

There are different opinions on Jackie J but I personally liked him. Class will be hard if you have no music background. He is confusing at times, and will also straight up insult at others. He definitely knows his music, and hes probably really smart but this doesn't mean he's the best at explaining . Take if you want an interesting experience.

This guy is ridiculous. Insults students, class has nothing to do with what you think music is about. Literally makes up terms for the class and makes you learn them. Utterly useless, very difficult. If you have no music experience, you have no chance at all. DO NOT TAKE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!!! He is THE WORST professor I've ever had!!!

I have a vast experience in music background and even this class was confusing to me. He doesn't do a very good job explaining things. He also is kind of a jerk and will subtly insult you and can make you feel uncomfortable.

If you don't have any music background or are not a music major, don't take this class. You have to read music and play the piano. He likes to randomly call you up in front of the class to play the piano as well. I'd steer clear unless you have a passion for music.

Really fun preofessor. The class itslef is kind of difficult if you aren't musically inclined. Jack is extremely helpful; he'll stay with you after class or set up appointments that last as long as it takes to get you to learn. Tests are challenging but doable, and he's VERY leaniant on the practicals you can mess up A LOT and still get an A.

This man is crazy but definitely in a good way. He will make you laugh (even if a little nervously). Gives you review sheets which help you prepare for the tests pretty well. Don't take him if you have previous music experience, though- he simplifies things too much and you will be confused. All in all, not that bad.

Very self-righteous, makes music theory much harder than it has to be it seems he gets pleasure out of making non-music majors miserable. He always put people down in a subtle way and makes you feel uncomfortable. Tests are very difficult

I can understand how some people found this course difficult, but if you have ANY music background at all, it should be an incredibly easy A. I dedicated a combined 2 hours outside of class all semester and got an A. Best advice, GO TO CLASS. If you go and pay attention, it should be very easy.

His explainations can be really confusing. He turns music into math and if you cant follow a lot of math concepts you will struggle. His test are easy though because you get a revieve sheet telling you exactly what is on it. You will have to clap rhythems and play scales for a grade.

As a proff, he's confusing and stubborn. He answers questions only to make people more confused and talks to the students as if they are stupid for asking them...but his study guides couldn't be better, he tells you exactly what will be on the tests and gives two class periods just for review.
