His class is soooo easy. Especially since it is online. Only 2 papers. He lets you re-write your first paper for a better grade and he also lets you write up to 4 papers to bring your grade up. Be sure to send him your rough drafts to look over as he tells you exactly what to take out and what to add. This class was an easy A.

Take PHIL3358 with Phillips! The course is easier online than it is in person. PHILL3358 online with Phillips is an easy A. Only two papers, all he wants you to do is explain his lectures; you don't even have to read the books if you've taken good notes on the lectures. With online, he gives you his lecture notes so that's a plus.

Grade is based on the 4 best papers you write throughout the semester. You have to write 2 for the midterm and 2-3 for the final. Each 5 pages in length. He gave the option to rewrite the midterm for a better grade. Class wasn't terribly interesting, but the readings are pretty good. You have to do the readings to be able to write the essays.

I learned more in this class than any other class at U of H, but it was also one of the most difficult. This is likely because I disagreed with nearly every stance taken in class. Read, discuss, argue, and challenge or class goes silent. 3 papers - all can be rewritten for a higher grade. I didnt rewrite any but poured myself into them; made an A-.

Very tough teacher. Awkward, but insanely smart. His class is heavily based on students producing in-depth philosophical essays that are short and straight to the point. If you can't, then this class (and professor) isn't for you.

Long pauses and um when students ask for clarification. He is unclear and hard to understand. He has high expectations when it comes to writing essays. He's looking for a specific type of writing... I do not recommend his class. Lecture does not help, you're on your own.

He went over the material well enough but handled questions horribly. His answers were always confused and indirect. Despite being a slow grader, he gave little feedback on papers. Used unspecific comments like "odd phrasing" to justify grades of B and lower. Accepts rewrites. Sadly, one of the better teachers in the department.

He says the first day of class that he only gives A's if you really understand. Class is reading intensive and there is a lot of essay writing, you have to write 6 to prepare for the final. I took notes from his online lectures. It was very easy.

The book is clear and easy to follow. If you do a little reading, you shouldn't have any problem with the material. He is helpful and willing to talk about other philosophical issues if you are interested and ask. The grading wasn't bad, but it's definitely not a blow off class. Most people seemed to assume so, and were thus very unpleased.

Phillips is a well enough writer/philosopher, but he is a terrible lecturer. He's often at a loss on what to think or say about the material, or hasn't read it in years in some cases. Tons of long silences and confused mumbles. He expects students to do all the teaching for him, so if you don't get a room full of talkative grads, you're screwed.

Absolutely rediculous expectations. His lectures were unclear. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! He is very full of him self and basically expects you to fail his class if you take it online. Talks down to the class and just makes you feel like your worthless.

Really intelligent guy. Very clear lectures. Only hard for people who expect a walk in the park, just because it's in the humanities. Compared to my other courses, it was actually a lot less time-consuming. But I'm studying quantum physics, so... you know. Just kidding. Really not that much work. I studied last minute for everything and got an A.

A bit... err... out there. Possibly an ex hippy. Interesting material that just doesn't seem to be explained very well. Most of our class time was spent sitting in silence waiting on him to think of what to say next.
