Not helpful at all. This professor often goes on rants about anything other than what you need to learn. I took this class for the AH gen ed credit & found it to be annoying, since I rarely got any information from the actual lecture. All the stuff he presents in lecture are just his opinions, so you must figure out the rest on your own.

Dr. Smith is a great professor, I've taken most of his classes and he really knows his stuff. Do the readings and come prepare to discuss them and you will do fine.

Did not know much on the topic he was teaching. (Caribbean History) I could have done a better job teaching the class based on stories I was told by my family members.

Smith is a GREAT professor. His lectures are interesting with good side notes, and he can be quite humorous. He gets a bit sidetracked, but sometimes it actually enhances his teaching. Make sure you do the readings because the class discussions will be hard to get through if you don't. He is a really caring man who cares about all his students!

Comment:
The class itself is really easy and the material is dense but common-sense. His lectures can be a bit dry and he gets easily side-tracked but is a very nice man. He knows the material and goes out of his way to help you understand and prep for the exam. His book choices are interesting but the assignments with them are boring and not worth it.

Great class. Very interesting. Dr. Smith is the best history teacher at Potsdam. Very thorough with lectures. He tells you what to study so if you do the study guides and review before the test your golden. Definitely my first choice professor.

He does get a little sidetracked sometimes, but he's a nice and funny guy. He's very specific on what he wants in writing, which can be a bit annoying. Overall, he's a good professor, though.

I don't think he is that good. He never really gets through his outline, instead he wastes more than half the class on one question of a quiz or he goes on a tangent in other parts of history and "introduces" them, even though they're 80 years in the future. he gives trivia instead of teaching you what's really on the test. I got good grades though

I thought this was going to be an incredibly boring class, and had this been taught by anyone else, it would have been. But it was Prof. Smith - a teacher so positive and supportive it is difficult not to want to do well.

I love Dr. Smith, he is one of my favorite professors in the history department. I looked forward to going to every class because they caught your attention. I took away information that I never thought I would. He's wonderful especially US since 1945 (upper div) at 830 in the morning.

I loved _Clerks_ and _Dogma_, though I didn't think _Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back_ was very good. He does know a lot about American History, though he looks bigger on screen than in person.

I took him for history because everyone told he was great...very wrong in my opinion and my friend's opinion. He is very unclear and not direct when you ask a question, I thought he could have been a lot better teacher
