Comment:
Extremely lazy. The in class notes he posts on canvas are pretty much useless. They direct you to class slide which literally have nothing important on them. Uses break out groups to work on class problems but no one even converses in break out rooms so its pointless. Rushes through material assuming you already know everything.

Literally jumps straight into material assuming that you know everything. Super fast paced with no regards to the class learning what he's teaching. Puts us in groups and thinks that it'll help us for the exam and he literally wants us to write our exam on paper and submit a file while using proctorio for exams. Inefficient teaching style.

Probably one of the worst professors I've had to deal with. I messaged him for an extension of the assignment a week before it was due, he sent me a message two days after saying he went to extend it but saw I had already done it. Class is taught all through cengage, including tests. Looked at his notes maybe once. Chegg will save you here, use it

I took an online class with him over this summer and it was amazing. He offered a TON of extra credit and discussions made it so you could understand the content better. 4 days a week when homework is due but homework is easy. Midterm and final were a little more challenging but if you read the notes and study you're fine. He posts great notes.

This professor is completely inept and ignorant to any problems a student might face. I would highly recommend choosing any other economics teacher at CU. He seems to be lazy and tired.

I wish I had never taken this class or any class taught by this professor. His teachings are lazy, as he only lectures around 3-5 times a semester and still expects you to learn all of the economic models. He relies on group led discussions held by the students to teach concepts, while he sits back stealing our money. Doesnt even post notes.

Worst teaching experience Ive ever had. Maybe lectured twice, relies on students to teach class. Comes across as wasting his time when you ask questions. Extremely hard and unfair tests. Relies only on group assignments. Ive never had a teacher who seemed like they didnt care about my success more than him.I didnt miss class and learned nothing

Worst teacher I've ever had. Lecture notes are hardly explained, extremely sparse & any math is done by him in class. The math he does do is very graph heavy, not helpful for application. Rude to students & doesn't offer help if asked questions. Test q's are very hard to prepare for. Much learning comes from dense economic articles w/ no guidance.

Comment:
Mertens believes that forcing students to adhere to his unforgiving and redundant teaching system is the best way to learn. He cites recent studies as evidence, and fails to take into account student learning styles. His attitude toward the class is rude, evident by his syllabus in which he mocks FAQs and threatens to lower grades for accidents.

online Econ class was absolutely awful. Assigns multiple chapters for one exam. Exam questions are nothing like the notes he posts online. Literally took him weeks to respond to multiple emails about questions and is not very helpful when you ask for reasoning or why something is as it is. Would highly not recommend.

Professor Mertens is a nice guy, but lecture notes and lectures are extremely dry. He makes you learn on your own by doing Group Assignments and isn't much help in the classroom.

Bill is a great professor. Don't get me wrong, his classes are tough, but if you put in the effort you'll do fine. Lectures usually involve problems for solving in small groups, so he makes you think instead of just spoon-feeding you or just having you memorize the steps. Problem sets are given out only as exam practice.
