Robb is a phenominal lecturer. He is extremely knowledgable, and does genuinly want students to learn. That said, he never follows his syllabus and he is extremely hard to reach outside of class. Expectations for assignments can be unclear. It can also feel like a boys club (He's old), but if you attend class but do the readings you'll succeed.

Well respected teacher. Very kind and professional, however, the online format was a little rough. There are two essays and a midterm, and the class is very reading heavy -- if you do choose to read. All around though, great and fair teacher, does care about the class and material.

Does not follow syllabus at all. No electronic communication ever. Class is completely based on what he feels like talking about in lecture that day. There is no outline for midterms or finals. If he likes you, you will get A-. If he does not, you will get C+. Avoid at all costs unless you know the Odyssey, the Iliad, and Plato's work inside out.

He clearly loves the class's topic, and class is spent with him lecturing in a disorganized fashion. You can get by on midterm and final just by doing the reading. No sort of instruction on final paper which is 15 pages. Definitely grades based on how much he knows/likes you so make an effort

Kevin Robb is a wealth of knowledge. He really just wants his kids to learn-- all the assignments are open-ended, so you can really dive deep into any topic that interests you. That is valuable beyond words. He also has a good sense of humor. The one thing that bothered me was that he seemed to prefer male students-- a symptom of his age, likely.

Dr. Robb is an absolutely brilliant man all-around. I've had my fair share of great professors, and there's no doubt he is at the top of the list. Every step of the way he draws on unique tangents that make it very interesting. If you pay attention and make insightful comments/questions it goes a long way.

No grading criteria - he doesn't care about his students at all. The extent of feedback you get from 1-on-1 review sessions is deplorable. He told me what to fix in my essays - when I fixed them, I still got a bad grade. He didn't give me a reason nor any room for improvement. His class is more like a pathetic ad for his book.

Grading is attendance based and two midterms that are essay format. You can show up and not pay attention in class, as long as you sparknotes the readings before midterms. Make sure to ask him a question every now and then after class- you will get an A if you express any kind of extra interest

Great teacher, I had him twice (GSEM and PHIL 315) If you make even the slightest effort to get to know him outside of class and show interest in the class you will get an A. He grades based on how much he likes you, but he is super friendly. Honestly my favorite teacher ive had at USC so far,

He's one of the most incisive, wonderful, inspiring educators I've ever had. Some of my other classmates thought he was dry, but if you love the subject matter and engage with him, this will be one of the best courses you ever take.

Comment:
For PHIL 104, you have to write two essays. For both of which, you can practically write anything you want. But, oh my god, this guy is a horrible grader. Gives you practically no feedback, his comments are literally 2 words, and underlines random things and gives you a fabricated grade based on no set rubric. Terrible professor who does not help.

Wouldn't recommend him as a Professor. Although he is extremely knowledgable about his subject, he misses the whole point of what the subject should be. Instead of eliciting class participation via the Socratic Method, his class is all lecture (which often times gets off topic). Much more a historical account of philosophy than actually philosophy

Prof Robb is a funny, nice, if sort of rambling, old man. The class is very easy (only two out of class and two in class essays), but you need to attend lecture enough to write the kind of essay he will want. It's based almost entirely on The Odyssey and then Plato's works- not exactly the philosophy class I expected.

Dr. Robb taught my dad so I had grown up hearing how wonderful his class was. I'm so thrilled I got to take it before he retired, because he totally lived up to his reputation. He is an expert in his field and shows incredible passion. Take this class! I loved every minute!

Comment:
Prof. Robb is a kindly, chuckling old man. He's enthusiastic about the pre-Socratics for sure, but he is hard to understand. His format is totally lecture-style, and it is hard paying attention the whole time. It's easy to get lost during class since what he says gets convoluted a lot and often goes on tangents. 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 15-page paper.
