Professor Gaffney is an amazing professor. The best math prof I've had so far at Northeastern. He makes it seem so easy and tries his best for students to understand. Homework is graded but I see that as a good thing. Do it properly, it boosts your grade. It also prepares you a lot for midterms/finals...

First time it calc 3 for econ was offered at Northeastern. Prof. Gaffney really means well, however the way he teaches the course will ruin you if you are not a genius. He dives into anything he wants to and takes examples straight out of textbook. No fluidity in what he teaches. He is helpful with office hours. 15 kids started, 7 finished course

The class is hard- homework is collected and graded daily, weekly quizzes and exams are much more difficult than homework. Lectures are fast paced and he teaches useless applications of concepts. Check homework with friends and study/do old problems for tests/quizzes. Gaffney is accessible outside of class and will help you a lot in office hours.

Comment:
Professor Gaffney is the best Calculus 3 teacher at Northeastern University. Many students complain about the difficulty of the class, but the real underlying issue is the complaining students' lack of work ethic (and if he/she works really hard and still does not comprehend the material, then he/she is in the wrong class/major).

He might be the worst teacher I have ever had. He hardly ever used examples in his lectures. He never told you when anything was coming up, especially tests. HIs whole class was just running you through proofs for the equations that you need to know, and not actually showing you how to use the equations.

Quizzes are meant to hurt your grade, only a few questions, and he tries to trick you. He puts stuff on the quizzes that were focused on during lectures. Doesn't drop the lowest grade. This class will drop your GPA which is used to get you a good job. His lectures are terrible, he puts up a bunch of definitions, not many examples.

If you are a gifted student and want to take a challenging class, take Gaffney! He will give you a lot of interesting works to do. However, if you are an average student who just want to pass the course, avoid him for sure!

I have had a very frustrating semester with Professor Gaffney. He seems to cater his class to gifted students, not the majority, leaving us average students left in the dust. It seems that his tests are focused on how quickly you can complete them. A slow test-taker, I never finished one of his exams no matter how hard I studied.

I got an A- in the class but im not some teachers pet that would overrate this professor. Hes a bad teacher. His Tests are unfair, and his homework takes forever but doesn't help for quizzes. Hes very unorganized and has messy writing. However he does write the final so you're not shocked when you see it. He enjoys tricking students. Very stressful

Not the best teacher, but a genuinely good guy. He really means well. If you do the homework on time and take the time to understand the topics covered, you will do just fine. Definitely the best teacher you can get for calc 3. On top of that, he scaled every test we had and gave extra credit on hw

Writing on board is incomprehensible. Treats your grades as jokes and gives quizzes far more difficult than the 10 hours of homework he assigned that week. The one positive: you will probably do better on the final than students in other classes b/c he makes it so difficult to do well on his tests that you will be prepared for the department final.

Very good lecturer who keeps things moving along. Very interesting. Quizzes tend to be difficult as you take them, but the material seems much easier a week or so after the fact, so focus on studying/hw to stay ahead of the curve. Final was quite difficult, but study hard and there should be a nice curve to help you out. Definetly reccomend.

I remember taking him and I was told that I was very lucky to have him, as he was the best teacher to have teach Calculus III. I was curious as to why so I actually went to all of the other professor's review sessions before the final. What an eye opener. Gaffney was very thorough when explaining concepts and made study guides tht match the test

Gaffney's class was a lot of work and often times what we were doing was very difficult to understand however he did a great job in lecture in explaining things so that we would eventually understand him. You do a lot of work but its worth it in the end because the other classes have a much harder time with the final.

Very thorough during his lectures, and an obvious willingness to help. Never go into a quiz though without doing the homeworks. People might see mandatory homework as a downside, but I see it as an upside since your not relying heavily on doing well on exams. Labs are easy, just don't do last minute in case of questions.

Good amount of hw but it helps. Lots of quiz but if you follow what he's saying in class and study like he tells you, you'll do fine. Pretty good teacher
