Comment:
I took the online version of Virtual Worlds. Everything was poorly explained, and when I sent emails asking for help I'd be lucky to get three words in response. The online meetings in Second Life were pointless. Everything I learned came from my own research, not from her. She seems nice, but she's a bad motivator, bad teacher, bad communicator.

She is an amazing professor! She really bases her lectures on the students' interests and is great for speaking to about class and non class interests and concerns. It is really not hard to do well in her class - you just participate and hand in your work. Most of the readings are online articles too!

To sum up her teaching ability, I share this anecdote. We were supposed to have a lecture on Second Life. The "lecture" consisted of an hour and a half of her playing Second Life while the students watched. Waste of my time

Her lectures were a complete waste of time. A good chunk of the lecture was spent watching 20-30 min clips of other people lecturing from internet websites. Very boring speaker. Spends a long time, in a roudabout way, saying little to nothing. Very nice lady in person, and her passion for the subject is obvious.

I would go through great elaborate lengths to never have to hear her voice again. The material was super interesting - she was the opposite.

Took a Distance Ed course from her. It was very disorganized and hard to follow. She clearly doesn't know how to use webct effectively. Very little direction. Assigns hundreds of pages of readings, but provides only a paragraph (if that) each week to explain how they fit together. No one had any idea what to do on the assignments.

She was nice, and could tell when she was talking about stuff that interested her, and tried to bring in physical examples of technology she was speaking about. I was a little annoyed, however, that when the lecture for my group project came up, a 3hr lect. on nanotech consisted of a 40min clip of Fantastic Voyage, 10min of lect, then dismissed.

Comment:
A good prof who, despite her flaws, got a lot of criticism she didn't deserve. She organized the course material in a very effective way, but mass confusion was caused by her quick lecture pace, introduction of foreign concepts, and lack of communication with TAs. The material was interesting, and her knowledge of current technologies was an asset.

Carole is an non ending bank of knowledge. the woman is smart and knows a hell of a lot about a hell of a lot of things. She is intellectually stimulating and if you get to know her, she's funny, understanding, and quite sweet. Her classes are dense I think because she tries to give you as much bang for your buck in the limited time she has.

farber is the nicest prof you'll find in fims. she let me reschedule my midterm around a vacation, and i ended up staying and talking with her in office hours for the better part of an hour about random dorky****. awesome, farber - she's my favourite.

I have to say she's nice, but it's the kind of "nice" reserved for that strange, cat lady who lives at the edge of the ravine and hands out apples with razor blades on Halloween. This women's nuts!

Students reacting to Prof. Farber are reacting to their ultimate fear of theory. As a ph.d student who had the privilege of having Farber for my Masters can attest to her incredible knowledge. She was a major source of inspiration and intellectual exploration. Wish there were more teachers like her!

Farber is such a nice prof. Although the course wasn't the most stimulating you have a chance to do very well if you just listen to what she says. She'll do anything in her power to make it easier for you.
