Professor Maddox is one of the best professors at JMU. While his class may not be the easiest, as demonstrated by the rest of the responses, it is enlightening and worthwhile.

This class is definitely not a class to take if you are not willing to put in the work. You have study and write one paper other than that the class is not bad at all and Professor Maddox is very nice and I recommend meeting with him during his office hours.

this class isn't easy by any means, def don't take if you're looking for an easy A in a gen ed, the lectures are hard to follow along with since it's just pictures of artwork and him talking about them, def need the textbook but for the final and midterm he told us the exact questions that would be on it and we could prepare beforehand

I dropped this class right before the final because it was an insane amount of work. His lectures were impossible to pay attention to because it was just slides of art and him narrating in the background. If this class was in person I'm sure I would have had a better experience, but unfortunately we all got screwed over this semester.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR A GENED, YOU WILL HATE YOUR LIFE!!!! I'm currently taking my final exam and I am crying. The amount of time and effort you have put into to get a good grade is RIDICULOUS. I am genuinely so upset I took this class. It is hard for no reason. :'''(

Mr. Maddox truly cares about his students and is an inspiring professor. He's very passionate which makes the class super fun and engaging. I highly recommend if you're a decent writer and are willing to put forth effort. He will give extra credit on exams and essays if you provide good detail and reference the textbook/lectures.

Look, this guy is weird, but he's very caring and wants his students to do well. His lectures are boring bc the material is boring. The midterm and final make up most of your grade and seem impossible, but if you study and try your best you'll be fine. He's very understanding too! If you need this class for a gen-ed, you will be fine with Maddox.

Avoid prof Maddox if you can. His reviews on here are accurate. He has very unclear grading criteria and will tank your grade if he doesn't like you. He also takes attendance every class and you only get like two skips. His lectures don't make any sense and he is super boring.

This man is WILD. There was one day he barked and meowed at us, instead of just drinking water he'd lean his head back and gargle it, and he danced around sometimes. Definitely an interesting guy, and very passionate about art, but taking this as a gen ed was not a good idea. His class is based around memorization and a few essays.

Prof Maddox cares a lot about his students and material. Granted, lectures can be a little hard to follow, and the textbook is droning. But if you can get through them and play along, you will do well. He gives study guides and tells you what the exam will be like. He is flexible and caring, and so passionate in his lectures. Not a bad choice

I personally loved him. He loves what he does and wants everyone to succeed. He's quirky and his lectures can be a little all over the place. I don't recommend you take this class if you are taking 16+ credits, there's A LOT of memorization. However, he does give you all of the possible questions for exams on day one: this is your key to success.

Maddoxs class has a lot of information, but just like any other class, it takes organization to do well. If you leave studying off until the last minute of course you will feel overwhelmed and not do well!! Maddox does very well at preparing his students. He has the biggest heart and genuinely wants to see all his students do well and succeed.

Maddox is a very quirky man. His lectures can be all over the place, but its obvious he cares about his students and the material he is teaching. I honestly did not pay much attention in his class, but the week before final and midterm, he set up a lesson with one of his former students which helped tremendously.

Charles Maddox is the craziest, most unfair, delusional professor, I have ever had. He requires so much memorization and it is honestly unfair. I don't think he realizes we have other classes and activities to focus on. His final is all written: vocabulary, artwork information, short answer, and two essay questions. Charles is a complete lunatic.

Maddox was one of the most boring professors I have ever had. He would stare at the board and mutter his opinions about every piece of art. he expects you to know as much about art history as he does. the lectures were a waste of my time and this is the weirdest guy I have ever met. do not take arth or maddox ever.

very unique and unlike any other professor I've had. Maddox is a very intelligent, surprisingly spritely man. Remembers personal details about his students, loves what he teaches and his job, recognizes that not everyone is a "test taker." would definitely recommend.

Maddox is an okay professor, but he genuinely loves the subject he teaches and that's very obvious. However, it's more of a teach yourself from the textbook and get the info reinforced by the lectures. Also, he is very scatterbrained and it's easy for him to get off topic. Sometimes you don't know if what he's saying is important for class or not.

Yea have fun, this class was awful from the start. he's super boring but is a very nice man. He does care about his students and their grade but it doesn't matter because there's an insane amount of info to remember for the tests and quizzes.

He's such a kind soul, but I could not for the life of me pay attention in class. He speaks very fast and monotone, and will spend most of the class on a tangent. There is an ungodly amount of information to know for each test, and he asks very specific questions. You will not pass the class without reading and studying.

HILARIOUS. I actually looked forward to coming to class he made things so interesting but sometimes would go off in tangents. He gives you almost everything you need to know for tests with handouts and hints, and offers extra credit for those who don't do well on them. Small paper assignments on the side also boost your grade.
