Chris is extremely knowledgable in his field, if you are interested in obscure facts he is a great prof. He post all his notes so it is easy to catch up if you miss a class. However; get ready to take notes, he usually just lectures.

very tough midterms, two papers that are marked fairly easily. Wouldn't be a big deal that he has hard ass tests, but he uses a marking system that makes it impossible to get an A, or even an A-, wouldn't be a bid deal but it's not curved so it's impossible to get. a good mark

Excellent professor! He terrified me on the second day of class, but as I worked through the semester I realized that he's not scary at all. This man is hilarious and he knows it. He knows what he's talking about, and there's a lot of value in the side-stories he tells as he diverges from the main lectures. Made me want to switch my major to CLASS.

Empire/republic classes, don't buy textbook. All other classes you need the textbook. too lazy to read? gives a great sum-up during classes. My Fav prof at this uni! I plan my classes around his courses! Usually about 2 papers given months in advance. Gives topics to study for final. Extremely knowledgeable, has every right to be arrogant.

Very knowledgeable. He has a nice sarcastic sense of humor which adds a unique favor to the lectures. Just attended class. If necessary, like in a concept heavy course like Roman Law, READ THE BOOK! This is not necessary in his history courses (IE Roman History). Gives you the shortlong answer questions well in advance of the exams.

This man is outrageous! Class is not mandatory, nor is buying the textbook (he made us buy his...) He is arrogant but he's got quite a unique sense of humour too. He's pretty laid back all in all and knows a lot about a lot! There are better classics profs out there, but there's no need to avoid Mackay.

Excellent prof. Able to simply lecture to the class without the use of notes or slides about topics that really delve into the fabric of ancient history. He will not put up with whining or people being idiots in class which is great. Helpful and understanding if you approach him via email or privately. Don't expect any easy A's.

He's kind of a pompous ass, but in an awesome way. Maybe he's a bit arrogant and full of himself, but he is actually brilliant enough to justify that arrogance. If you do the work, you will learn a lot.

Great Prof. Easy to tell in these ratings who works hard and who doesn`t. Not intimidating once you get familiar with his style. Absolutely hilarious with his dry sarcasm. Most knowledgeable prof I probly have ever had in respective field. Down side is ridiculous marking scheme (93=A and 80=B-). Individual assignments not marked very tough though.

Very knowledgeable and interesting professor, but his standards were very high (an A started at 94%). That being said, if you work very hard you can still do well. He wrote the textbook, but it is both interesting and very usefull. He expects a little too much of students, but within his own inflated standards he is quite fair.

I don't know what all the complaints are about, honestly. Yes, the papers were marked fairly harshly...but the midterm and final were straightforward and easy to study for (HE GAVE YOU THE ESSAY TOPICS BEFOREHAND!), and the course material was awesome. He is a hilarious, engaging lecturer, and I remember every single lecture.

Mackay is hilarious and his textbook rocks. If you are a Classics major then you should love his course. If you don't then you probably either hate classics or have no sense of humour and I hope I never meet you. Loves talking about his wife and ex-wife, (both fellow classicists)

I've taken both the 281 Roman survey and the 463 Early Rome siminar with Mackay. Very knowledgable. More laid back since he is no longer grad chair. Tough courses, you need to but the work in and do readings, but he is fair and you earn your mark. You most definitally learn a lot of the course of the course.

He's a little full of himself, but super funny! I'm a science major and I took this class for fun, and I really enjoyed it. He is such a funny prof! His tests are fair, just keep up with the reading (it's minimal), and go to the lectures.

No doubt he's over fond of his own opinions and doesn't feel the need to disguise this at all, but obviously knows his stuff and gives an entertaining lecuture. Primarly a political historian; if you're looking for sub-altern voices from the Ancient Roman Empire go elsewhere. Also, if you really like Gladiator this might be a rough class.

He is arrogant, pompous, and condescending. The grade breakdown is extremely tough and unforgiving. The lectures are boring and testable material is just barely glazed over. I would never take a course with him again, nor would I recommend taking a course under him.The only way you will enjoy this class is if your entire life is devoted to classics

Arrogant? Rude? Absolutely. But one of the best profs out there. People either love him or hate him, but he's a fantastic prof if you don't mind working hard. Not for the lazy who want an easy grade! Grades fairly, even if you don't agree with his opinions.
