Comment:
You people who rate him hard obviously did not highlight what he referenced in lecture. Yes, there is a lot of reading and a lot of materials. BUT if you pay close attention and focus on what he actually TALKS ABOUT IN CLASS - you will do fine. He loves his subject matter and is fair.

I really enjoyed this class. There is a lot of assigned reading, but as long as you skim it and read the course pack instead, you should be fine. Prof. Stein knows what he's talking about and is very interesting to listen to. We talked about current events a lot. The tests are all right, but he lets you drop 2.Also, attendance is checked so show up

Horrible teacher. WAY too much reading, as if his class is the only class you're taking that semester. His tests are EXTREMELY difficult (you basically have to memorize all the reading he's given you) and only grades you on the tests, so there is nothing else you can do to possibly help your grade.

I took this class because I have always found revolutions fascinating. I could not stand his class and stopped going after a class where he yelled "POLISH POPE" and "you could be a masochist" at a random student. Tests are on ridiculous amounts of reading and on the most random thing ever like a person's middle name. Grade average was a 2.0

As long get the course pack and highlight what he tells you, you will get a at least a 3.0 on every test. The first test is about the reading so make sure you do it. Also the article questions on the NYT are very straight forward. Also gives extra credit for attendence randomly, so make sure your there.

He has a speech impediment that is distracting. He is also extremely intelligent and fair. If you want to learn take this class. It's not too hard to get an A either. One of the best teachers at MSU.

LOTS of reading: 2 books, hundreds of pages of notes and NY Times articles he chooses for 7 weeks. He gives you an online course pack but only caters to students who actually buy the pack. Prefers to scream for 4 hours a week rather than use a mic. Seems like a nice guy, but his lectures are random stories rather than supplemental to the material.

He was by far the worst prof. I've ever imagined. On top of he horrible public speaking I have never had harder exams. This class covers 3 full books, 293 pages of notes (not exaggerating) and somewhere around 100 newspaper articles. A question on his test might ask you for a quote some one had on a topic and he will try and trick you anyway.

lots and lots of reading! but he is very clear and so are his notes. i don't know if it was just me but i thought the tests were pretty challenging. also he screams instead of using a microphone which can be irritating at times. stein is incredibly intelligent and if you want to take a class on foreign affairs this is you guy.

Professor Stein is a great teacher and very interesting. He's extremely knowledgeable about foreign affairs, having worked for the UN... He talks about current events as well as class room material. Lecture can be tough to listen to at times because he screams instead of using a microphone...
