Not helpful at all! Essays had marking criteria that was useless (lost marks because I didn't use the books that they suggested). I never knew what to take notes on. He did add in interesting tales of historical figures, but only sometimes related it back to the material at hand. I would NOT suggest taking this class.

He knows his stuff and is generally polite in person, thought his lectures are boring. I found him to be arrogant and subtly rude. He responded to e-mails but they were seldom helpful. Many e-mails replies I found very terse. His assignments are confusing and dry. You learn to write a traditional and tedious research paper. I say avoid this prof.

One of the best Profs at Carleton. I had virtually no interest in Canadian History prior to taking and had to take it because I needed a humanities course, but he makes you live Canadian History. He is an expert in his field, an extremely nice man and has genuine interest in the field. A must have prof. for any Canadian HIST course.

Obviously knows his stuff. Incredibly helpful and responsive to his students. He responds to emails faster than you can send them. Will advise and encourage you on your essays. I always hated history and he's made me into a history nerd!

Nicest prof ever! And very intelligent. The material was pretty boring but that's to be expected with a Canadian Political History course. Also, wrote me a very nice reference letter (without even really knowing me)!

His voice is faaaar too soothing to be a morning class. It is unclear what he wants you to write during his lectures, but his stories can often be funny. He is very nice one on one and can be very witty. Overall good class, but can become tedious, almost boring, if you're not really into the subject matter in the first place.

What to say... 1) he made you buy 3 textbooks and I didn't use any of them and still got a B+... 2) Lectures were pretty boring.. talks about a lot of useless stuff, but the class wasn't unbearable 3) He has a strange obesseion with dogs and cemetaries... Overall it's a decent enough class, and the prof is a nice enough guy. I'm impartial, really.

Great prof--knows the subject matter well. At first I wasn't such a fan of the class, but he tries to make the material interesting, grades fairly and only has an essay and a final. Also, I love the way he pronounces "rather" and everyone who's taken his class knows what I'm talking about.

Professor McDowall was probably my favorite professor at Carleton. I loved his lecture style: it's like story-time. Also, a really, really kind man (and his class will boost your GPA).

Duncan McDowall is by far the greatest prof I've ever had at Carleton. He brought Cdn. Political History to life and got people excited. He was thorough and concise and did a great job at making history seem relevant.
