Takes a little getting used to- but a great professor. Dry sense of humor and fun to listen to once you get used to his style of lecturing. I didn't end up using the textbook at all for the class, though- going to lecture and taking notes on problems we did in class sufficed.

Jon Dayley is funny, brilliant and totally hot. If you're even remotely interested in linguistics, take a class from him. If you're an educ or lit major simply trying to fulfill the LI305 requirement, take the class from Mary Ellen Ryder. She is also very friendly and considerably less demanding of her students.

His sense of humor is very dry and you have to understand that. I have had many classes from him and I know that he doesn't mean to make anyone feel dumb, in fact he gets excited when he sees someone "get" something. He is one of the smartest yet humblest men I know and is single-handedly responsible for changing my entire career.

Linguistics is a difficult subject no matter how you slice it. I think that Jon Daley is an excellent educator, and that people sometimes confuse the difficulty of Daley's teaching to the difficulties of their comprehension of that subject matter. Daley works very hard to get students to understand the subject matter as to what his class is based.

Intelligent and Funny (dry humor). Not good at explaining things though. If you don't follow his logic he doesn't usually have another way to explain. He is still the only prof I ever heard swear in class on a regular basis.

Daley is very helpful about answering questions and asks before every class if anyone has any. So it's their own fault if they don't get what is going on or what the homework is about. The tests are easy and mostly depend on in class lectures, although there is a lot of reading, it's mostly backup for the lectures which might help if you don't get what is going on! He is a little quirkey, but who isn't? He lets people discuss in class...even the people who should shut up.

Dr. Daley can come off as aloof, but the truth is he's just not much of a people person. Teaching may not be the ideal choice for him, as he has a hard time explaining concepts in more than one way. He knows what he's talking about, though, and has an ex

Extremely knowledgable but out to sea as an instructor. Assignments and expectations are vague at best. May come off as haughty and aloof. Take Amry Ellen Ryder's class instead.

Jon may not be the easiest teacher to learn from, but he KNOWS his ****. Hang in there and ask questions to keep him talking. Amazing that such a shy guy turned out to be a teacher. Ask about his tour of the jungles. Interesting background.
