Comment:
Probably the most patronizing professor at the University. Claims you need to read the book but teaches you to ignore the book and use his notation instead. Gives you about 3 seconds to process the information before he asks you questions and then taps his foot and calls you stupid if you can't answer them. Hates being a professor and lets you know

Based on what I read here, I thought the class was going to be terrible; it turned out I liked him a lot! You must be comfortable with math and when he gives you any piece of advice, take it. No homework and no final; only 2 exams worth 33% each and a quiz worth 20%. It is only 20 questions, so be prepred and it will be okay. Also, he curves a lot!

If you have to take 301, Ying is most likely your only option. The class is extremely difficult and you will have to work hard for a high grade. Ying can come off as arrogant but if you go to his office hours he will help you and take the time to work through problems with you. He also curves a lot so the tests are doable.

Your grade comes down to 4 quizzes, each 20 questions multiple choice. Every questions is pretty analytical, which means the quizzes are extremely difficult. I don't think there has been an average above 65. He goes fast during lectures and his hand writing is illegible. I'm a pretty good student and struggling, wish I took it with another prof.

80 multiple choice questions determine your grade ( 4 quizzes with 20 q's each), oh and he puts the term "none of the above" to good use so you really need to know the material. definitely do not even think about taking this class

Ying was a really tough professor, but I also slacked off a lot in the bringing. When he says do the homework problems on your own, DO THEM! When he says copy your notes down after class, DO IT! If you do those two things you'll pass easily. Go to him if you do not understand a lecture. No final and I had a 50% test average before the final quiz!

The hardest class you will ever take at UD. tells students to drop every class if they do not understand something. Low key a nice guy if you go to him personally

Really wanted to give Ying the benefit of the doubt, but he really just isn't a good teacher. Everything is based off lecture. The book does not help at all. If you are trying to study for exams, all you can do is review notes from class and change the numbers in the problems. Entire grade is based off two exams and a quiz, all multiple choice.

Awful teacher, who does not help his students succeed at all. He claims that all information he goes over is "basic", so therefore you should know what he is saying in his poor English. No textbook is used. Everything is based off of his lectures. Impossible class. First exam had a 15 points curve to get to an average of 70...

Terrible... Who knows what he is writhing on the blackboard. His handwriting is very illegible. Be sure to prepare ur glasses. Also he speaks obscure English. He is really fast and doesn't care if the whole class has got that. The worst professor I have ever had. The first midterm average is 70-after a 15 curve.

He gets a bad rep, but doesn't really deserve it. He does come off as arrogant at times, but he is extremely clear and concise. His lectures are well organized, and his exams are all multiple choice based only on his lectures. Not hard if you make an effort to understand the concepts and math. Textbook is not used much at all.

He thinks he is an economist, and try to play tough to students. He doesn't care how his students do and doesn't want to help them perform better. Worst instructor i've ever met, shouldn't be a teacher. I gave him the lowest in the course evaluation, and will do any other things possible to fight him back.

Clear and concise! You know exactly what to expect on the exam. Grading system sucks, because you are ranked against other people in the class. Not a prob with enough studying though. Also, he is kinda rude (sometimes). Good teacher though!

So much to say, so little space to say it in ... John Ying is a terrible professor. The only grades you get are the one midterm and the one final. No attendance or homework or quizzes. Actually, he somehow keeps "mental notes" on attendance and homework ... in case he wants to take points off ... good luck to his future classes hahaha

what he did on the class was simply to copy his notes on the blackboard and read them again, with obsure English and unfriendly face. He is very weak on Economics: just look at his website on the department webpage, the latest published paper of his was years ago. Never sit in his class unless you want to kill time in a painful way.

301 is a hard class, regardless of which professor you take it with. With Ying, you best attend all of his lectures and write down all the notes. Grades are curve a lot, so just do your best. Not the worst professor, but is very hard.

Some complicated material and graphs, but the first 5-10 minutes of each class was a quick review of what the previous lecture had gone over. Grade based on 4 non-cumulative tests. No quizzes, homework, or final exam. The book follows along with the lectures but is not required. Easy A if you go to class and study your lecture notes.

He gets a bad rep but I don't think it's 100% deserved. It is true he's mostly concerned with making himself appear smart. No one ever spoke up in class because they were scared. I wish there were some in class quizzes to boost our grades. To do well, write down everything he does, especially worked problems, and go over it later and memorize it.
