Comment:
Lisa Haines-Wright remains an inspiration to me, 20 years later. As a teacher myself now, I remember everyday how she treated students as fellow scholars and our ideas as significant. I try to do likewise. She helped us reimagine ourselves as serious students at a time in our lives when we hovered between tremendous immaturity and maturity.

I graduated a long time ago. Second stop on the nostalgia tour: Lisa Haines Wright. Back in the 1990s, Lisa was the most brilliant person on campus. My lifelong fascination with Deleuze and post-structuralist thought begins with her. In each of Lisa's classes I felt as if we were on the edge of discovering--actually, making--some new knowledge

Lisa is perhaps the best professor I have had at Beloit. She is an engaging lecturer, treats students' works on par with "literature" in the amount of consideration she gives them, and challenges us to think critically. Powerful speaker, thinker, and amazing eprson all around.

I had Lisa for ENGL 190 and 195. Her coursework was reasonable for 190, but it is NOT SO for 195. She's a great professor and very fair. She's happy to talk to you outside of class if you have any questions. That said, she assigns 1 book per class or per week. Never less. In addition, ENGL 195 has has coverage exams and they are HARD.

Lisa is a wonderful person & very passionate about what she teaches. She offers a lot of personal anecdotes, possibly spending more class time on that than she does on the course materials. The workload is reasonable & she is a fair grader. She offers great feedback % likes to help, although she is sometimes difficult to understand.

Lisa is always excited about the texts and really does have some amazing insights. Her writing assignments are not typical but are very useful and engaging. However, she can get pretty dogmatic about certain topics. But the absolute biggest problem for me was that I received zero feedback on my assignments.

Lisa is the most passionate person I have ever met. And that's not hyperbole, it's just the truth. Don't get me wrong, she's not for everyone. But if you can actually appreciate the insanity, she can be a truly inspiring person to know. Talking to Lisa outside of class was my favorite pastime.

Lisa is utterly devoted to the well-being and to the success of her students. Her intellect is shocking - she makes connections between abstractions and our world that have shaped me so positively. I owe so much to her. She is challenging; she does expect a lot, but she gives all of her to her courses. Simply outstanding.

Lisa is brilliant. Period. If you're smart, take a class with her. You will get much in return (and I promise you'll love her!). If you're not so smart, skip it. Your ego won't be able to handle her.

Lisa is wonderful! The negative comments about her are most likely from people who were not willing to read the 15 novels a semester plus extra material. She remains one of my favorite memories of Beloit. Her depth of knowledge and passion for material make her classes an absolute treat.

made no effort to facilitate class discussion, responded to whatever comments i'd squeeze into her monologue defensively (as if they were threats), cited me for having an "attitude problem" for taking notes; made no effort whatsoever to engage with me outside class; her class on torture was a torture itself... tyrannical and over-espressoed.

I'm clearly one of the 'favorites' people talk about on here, so take my review with that in mind. Lisa is THE reason I'm who I am. Being able to argue ideas with her and develop an understanding of critical theory prepared me (maybe overprepared me) for grad school. Cannot recommend her highly enough.

I took her many years ago (over 10) and she is one of the only professors I remember dearly and who still impacts the way I think about the world today. She is exactly herself, totally authentic, brilliant, a flavor of her own. Don't expect to cruise though. She's fair.

Lisa is extremely passionate and intelligent. She is also incredibly inappropriate. She uses class as a therapy session. Many of her comments concerned her very personal and traumatic experiences, often leaving her in tears. She is rather self-absorbed and clearly plays favorites.

I am where and what I am largely because of Lisa. She asks good questions and listens to your answers. If you're not threatened by the idea of having an actual conversation, you will grow in any course of hers. She encourages students' intellectual and professional development. And even though we're not here to rate her husband, he's great too. :)

Amazing teacher. Uses lots of material. Reading is ridiculous; start over the summer. You're not expected to read everything, though. Class lectures will make you question everything. I'd totally lose a limb for Lisa.
