Comment:
Richard Smith is overall pretty bland and uninspiring. He is not going to provide you with any help outside of the classroom, nor is he willing to give you any sort of support. You won't like his courses, and you won't have any major takeaways either, so talk to your TA to gain the best experience when dealing with any of his classes,

You teach yourself. Detailed course outline. Relevant topics and examples in readings. Exam questions require attention to detail and good memory. Intense marking rubric, and a little unclear to specifics. TA available for help and marks all work.

I am taking distance education. Basically, you are on your own. You pay for the class, pay for the textbook and you answer questions, do assignments and have exams. I think this class is a joke. If this is all I do, why did I have to pay anyone to "teach me"?

Richard did a great job of laying out this course online. It was very clear about what needed to be done and there weren't too many assignments. The reading 'modules' including lots of videos and the readings weren't too difficult. The material was very relevant as it was about mobile devices. Topic changes each semester.

Many students seemed bored but I was fascinated by the material every class. Easy to keep up when interested. This class is great for internet geeks. Great textbook too, I've kept it! Richard is a smart and interesting man with a passion for what he teaches.

this prof is again not a serious instructor, at least for 253.. so boring, such low expectations of students, I just didn't feel motivated by this class. I could hardly sit through a class/tutl I was so BORED. Lec/tutl are constant YT clips-this is not what school is about, its just demoralizing. text is fun&whimsical, assgmnts are easy. but srsly.

Tough midterm, you can't fall behind. But it's easy to keep up, especially because it's so interesting and he makes his lectures interactive, intriguing, and relevant.

Just like your wedding day, or the day your child is born, CMNS 253 will be considered one of the best experiences of your life..

Prof. Smith is wicked, he's hiliarious and tells it like it is. Sitting in on his lectures is not boring, he likes to bring some aspects of his personal life into the picture, & if you're listening in on a lecture online (live!) he actually responds to your lively commentary. He's very open and available to all his students for help & smiles a lot

The class is pretty difficult, but really interesting. Although it requires quite a bit of work, and is also quite on the technological side of things for a CMNS course, it is very fun and extremely engaging. I learned a ton from this course. Midterm and accompanying assignments are very fair.

Very good prof. I had an absolute disdain for technology before taking this course and he made me appreciate it and look at the "big picture." Lectures are interesting and engaging. A bit on the tough/scientific side though (for a CMNS course).

Took Richard's course for directed studies (1999) and 200 level CMNS in (1995). I'm working in the tech/ web communication field today thank's to Richard's geek course. Very good course that has helped me has put real bucks in my pocket.

really into what he teaches, always sending emails re technology, really keeps up with the latest stuff...however he's in serious denial about the difficulty of his class and has totally unrealistic expectations for his students - stubborn, unfair, biased

extremely helpful and nice guy. An okay lecturer but very willingful to offer additional help during office hours. Real tech geek. His courses are for the most part very com sci oriented, so if you like tech stuff, take his courses.

What more can you ask for than a prof who loves what he teaches? Very enthusiastic...puts the G in GEEK though! Seems willing to help if you need it. Course isn't that hard, fair bit of work though. Midterm was very fair.
