Comment:
Dorter is my favourite philosophy prof at UoG as his kindness and interest in the material shines through; however, do not take this course if you are impatient or looking for an easy pass. Your marks are based on a few essays with no real rubric. Though this is difficult, I found that it got me in the mindset of a true philosopher.

The best teacher on metaphysics at Guelph. Unfortunately essay feedbacks are useless and opinionated. Your grade in the final exam is proportional to the amount of intelligent notes you take and intelligent questions you ask in class. What's the point of the final exam if we can't know what our mistakes were?

Dr. Dorter is one of the best philosophy profs Ive ever had! He is so caring & sweet. He is open to class discussion & feedback. Dr. Dorter genuinely cares about his students & their comprehension of course material. He doesnt post any lecture notes, so going to class is a mustbut his lectures are very interesting and engaging so its worth it!

Comment:
Dorter (though a nice man) takes totally incomprehensible material and makes it twice as hard to understand. I'm worried I won't pass, and this is my major! I can honestly say this is the most difficult class I've ever had to take in this area. (Lectures gibberish, essays based on mostly 50-100 page long obscure documents, final 50%).

The lectures were awful and he didn't answer any questions clearly. If you tried to email him, he would forward it to the whole class. If you want an ok mark, all you have to do is write 3 essays worshiping Plato. But, if you are actually interested in the course material, find another prof or he'll ruin philosophy for you.

He doesn't post lecture slides (there aren't any) but don't let that deter you, he's AMAZING. I've taken four courses with him already and go out of my way to do so every semester. He's clear, well versed in a variety of philosophies, and super helpful. TAKE NOTES.

Very nice prof, but sometimes he went on about topics a lot of people were not yet familiar with, and maybe could have explained himself more. I often felt stupid attending this class. But overall, very kind professor.

I would honestly take any course offered by Dorter. I swear he knows everything. In my final year, I made my schedule around a class he was teaching. He is incredibly knowledgeable and considerate. Great human being and even better professor. Big assignments, but hugely rewarding.

A deeply knowledgeable, articulate, and caring professor, with an immeasurable knowledge of Greek sources. If I had to cite one shortcoming, it would be his tendency to use his Q&A with the class as a foil for advancing the thesis of his lectures, rather than more vigorously addressing questions.

I had him for philosophy of ethics a year and a half ago. I liked the course, and he was excellent. He is a good lecturer and very kind; I was having family problems, and he accommodated me without really letting me miss anything. Not sure what to say about "Hardness". Material was tricky, but not because of him or his teaching.
