Comment:
Professor Bell is well educated and does a great job expressing his lesson during the lecture. Beyond that, I did not enjoy my class(es) with Mr. Bell. He is very condescending, arrogant, and seems unhappy with his job. All of these things are taken out on the students, which makes it seem like he cares more about his lesson plans than the student.

The grading of papers is VERY subjective. There is not a rubric with point values for each requirement. I turned in a paper that I thought was pretty decent, and so did my friend who is a graduated art major, and I received a D. Let's be honest, this a 100 level class. Also, he does not use blackboard so you cannot monitor your grade.

A good guy but his class is a little bit monotonous because of how lecture heavy it is. You should definitely raise your hand and participate in class (and make sure it's good feedback because if it's not he can be a little condescending) and read the chapter so that you're able to participate. Has a lot of memorization and tests are 7/10 difficult

If you are good at drawing, take the class. If not, don't take it. Your designs are graded by how good it is and how you use the medium. His lectures are long because it's usually an hour. There are a lot of projects. If you get behind, good luck. You should be fine if you are a good artist. He encourages your work and also helps you.

If you can take a different prof. for drawing then do it. He expects you to know how to draw already even though it's an intro class. He spent more time lecturing on his art and places he's traveled or reprimanding students for being attached to technology than actually talking about drawing techniques.

John Bell is a good professor. If you like art, you will love his class. You will actually learn useful information about art that you can and will use for the rest of your life. If you do not like or appreciate art, just bear in mind that you could get a far worse instructor.

Not recommended for first time art students, expects you to know about design before you enter his class even though it's a beginners art class and most of us that were enrolled have never taken an art class before.

The class isn't very difficult if you dedicate time and effort to learning the material and working on assignments. Some of the time Professor Bell won't specify why he takes points off of assignments when you get your grade back, so I would recommend going to see him if you have questions. He's a nice and helpful guy. Really liked him!

Professor Bell is a very kind and helpful professor. His criticisms are fair and constructive, and I found myself developing greatly under his instruction. Go to class, put effort into assignments, and turn your stuff in on time. An A+ is difficult to achieve, but if you're dedicated and visibly put effort into your work, it'll show in your grade.

Comment:
His attitude's alright, the lectures are interesting enough, but his grading is excessively harsh. With assignments it seems like he cares more about students fulfilling the grading criteria than actually applying concepts learned in class. Dislikes tardiness, rarely accepts late work. If you dig yourself into a hole, good luck trying to get out.

Bell is a really a bad professor to have for art. He sucks all enthusiasm out of one of the most beautiful things to study. He is a very bad lecturer, and not a great artist himself; he's not what you'd call inspirational, nor does he make you excited to learn. He has a bad attitude in the classroom and it's infectious-- for the worse.

Comment:
Very judgmental of student works, arrogant, goes by how good the drawing is rather than the criteria of the assignment. He saw me after class to tell me my drawings were bad (which he gave me all Fs on) and that I should consider dropping the class or he would fail me. He couldn't even look at me when he told me these things. Beware!

I love painting and this teacher made me hate going to class. He wants the room to be dead silent the entire time. He walks around the room and tells people what they are doing wrong but doesn't ever seem to help. It's his way or the highway, not much room for creativity. Don't take his class.

He knows his field like no other instructor I've ever had.I wasn't that enthused by the prospects of taking this course as an elective and had had art rammed down my throat for my entire childhood. Enter John Bell, with a new, human perspective and true passion not only for Art History, but as an artist in his own right.Don't dis' «el maestro».

Don't take this teacher! He's arrogant, rude, plays favorites, and lives by the "It's my way or the highway" belief. Yes, you do learn the material, but his teaching style I found, along with many others in my class, were confusing and didn't allow any artistic liberties. He doesn't like it when you start including your own style and techniques.

Attend class, turn in work on time and don't interrupt when someone else is speaking. It's that simple. Those who rate him low just don't know how college works. There are rules and generally professors are suppose to be odd. Sure, he has a Holier than thou attitude sometimes. You wouldn't want some meek little man without confidence to teach you.

I took his Art History 101 & 102 classes....Bell is a snob, uses class as a platform to "toot his own horn" .....likes to continually BRAG about places he has traveled and show HIS work! Lol Oh well.....go to class, read and never question him....You'll do fine....

I agree with what the other reviewers are saying about Bell-he's pretentious and arrogant. I showed interest in his class, and gave him respect, but even that, coupled with my skill in art, didn't save me. He favored a girl who drew herself nude, and everyone else was obsolete in his eyes. I don't recommend him. Spare yourself the time and money.
