Keep up with the textbook readings and seek out extra help as necessary. This class required a lot of effort, but was really informative. It helps to have some knowledge of coding basics or R going in.

Its a statistics class, so the information to transfer might not be of interest to everyone in class. Prof. Halteman knows his stats and R. Steep learning curve.

Comment:
Dr. Halteman lectures very well, and his thoughts are clear and well-presented. If you read the text before class, you will have no difficulty. The only times I got lost were during demonstrations of R. He's good at teaching the mathematical concepts. Less so at explaining how to use R to employ them.

Waste of time and money, class was exciting as watching paint dry. The homework and tests were unclear and difficult to understand. I would not recommend this professor.

Really weak. Very hypocritical, because he talks about how lecturing is a bad teaching tool, and then he just talks at the board for 75 minutes, avoid if at all possible.

In all respect, he just isn't a good teacher and he dosen't have very good people skills. Uses a bad text book and grades harshly, based only on answers, not hard work. I defenately deserved higher than a C because I put a lot of time and effort into the course.

Seek the professor out during his office hours. He really knows the material well, and is always willing to help when asked. Nearly illegible cursive script does not help his teaching style.

He is horrible. Not helpful at all! He makes you teach yourself with a HORRIBLE book and he grades very harshly. When you go to him for help he seems very annoyed you're there. He is bland and not very interesting and people who work hard in his class do not get the good or at least DECENT grade they deserve.

Really easy class as long as you take the notes and do the homework. Boring, but it's statistics, so that's inevitable. Skipped half the classes and got a B.

You work in groups and teach yourself the material from the book, basically. He will come around and help you if you need it. I think it's better than lecturing because you really have to learn it and think about it. The group project were a drag though. Tests weren't too bad because you can use your book and a page of notes.

He makes you teach yourself, which isn't that bad because it's statistics which is easy, but the part that stinks is that you have to do all sorts of group projects, which he grades pretty harshly. On tests you get to use your book and a page back and forth of notes which is really nice, but the projects still suck.

I had him for statistics for engineers back in 91. I couldn't understand the material, and got a C. Took it again for my graduate degree, 11 yrs later(another university), and understood it and got an A+(and it was easy). Now that I remember, this guy can't even teach something that is easy(he get's

I enjoyed this class. You have to work hard, read the book lots, and come prepared to ask questions in class. If you don't understand, keep asking, he'll find another way to explain. I found him very helpful, dispite the bad jokes.

I'd say he was the worst professor at UMO, but since he never teaches his classes, his ability can't be determined. Avoid at all costs.
