Although this was a tough class, Prof Soifer really does care about his students and you can tell he puts in a lot of effort to help. I met with him a few times so he could help me go over some of the material, and it helped so much! He's not like other professors, he really seems to enjoy teaching and that reflects his personality. Great guy!

Great class, great professor. Would take another class from him. Attendance is basically mandatory because no material was posted online or distributed so if you missed a class, you had no way of knowing what you missed. Lots of papers since the midterm and final were essays, but we could choose our topics so it made writing them more interesting.

I really enjoyed this class and professor. The only downside was that he didn't post any information online or use slides , which I think would have been helpful. He was very responsive to emails, answered questions thoughtfully, and seems like he genuinely cares about his students. I look forward to taking more classes from him in the future!

His idea of a lecture is to read out of the textbook to you. No feedback on tests. Boring to no end. Interacts with a couple of students and ignores the lecture to chat with them. Waste of time taking the class.

He uses his own textbook for the class and gets paid for us buying his textbook that he requires. His lectures are him reading the textbook, no slides or notes. Don't like essays? Do not take his class! The midterm was 2 full essays in 50 mins, 2 assignments that were essays and the final is also an essay. Literally, all marks come from essays.

Its one of the hardest and boring class i have ever taken. He did not post any lecture notes or videos and have to attend the class and class is very boring. I have no other option but dont take this course if you are not ready to attend and make notes of each lecture.

Some of these reviews must be fake because this guy has got to be one of the worst profs at the U of R. Doesn't post any lecture notes, so get ready to attend every class whilst paying attention to every little detail and is very vague at what is required for assignments.

A very good Prof, understands the material very well and encourages class discussion, provides plenty of information not in the textbooks so make sure you attend the lectures. The tests were graded a bit tough but the review sessions before them were very helpful. Overall, a bit tougher than I expected but the learning experience is worth it.

Hardest class ever. Im a kin guy and sadly it was mandatory and Id rather quit school then take another class from him. His content made no sense and was beyond boring and his grading made no sense. I havent taken a class with him in years and it still haunts me how bad it was... stay clear from this one boys

Professor soifer really stands out as one of the most respected and caring profs I have had. He went the extra mile and was always willing to help. He is compassionate and willing to help as long as you are willing to put the work in.

Awesome prof! Gives a lot of examples and goes through midterms and is always available for extra practice and study sessions. Lectures dont include much direct note taking so reading the textbook And showing up to class was very important. If you showed improvement he would weigh those marks higher than the lower percentage ones.

The most considerate professor I have ever met. The class itself can be bland at times but he does his best to make it interesting, engage with the class, and help students through questions.

Very lecture heavy class, and none of the material is posted on UR courses, so if you don't show up there's no way you'll pass. However, Eldon is incredibly knowledgeable, and the lectures were never boring. Midterms and final are the only things you're graded on, but he's a very fair marker. Definitely recommend as an elective!

If you are not within the philosophy department like me, steer clear. Im sure he knows what he is talking about but I was unable to understand what what important in the things he discussed in class. Notes where not posted on line and he wrote very little on the board. It was very difficult to follow the class

His class was the hardest class i ever took. You have to read the whole book and attend regularly in class. He uses TA s to mark which makes more harder to earn marks. He doesn't post any notes or posts on UR courses which makes more hard to study. It was definitely hard class to me and I'm not considering to take from him in future.

He explains difficult concepts well, and is very helpful if you need additional help. His midterm and final are very easy if you just read over your notes a few times. The only other project is a major essay due at the end of the semester. I would definitely take another class from him!

Great professor. Explains things clearly even for students who have never taken philosophy before. Presents both sides of the argument. Very willing to help and listen to different perspectives. Expectations for papers and exams are made very clear.

I only took Philosophy because it was mandatory, and I am not interested in the subject matter at all. That being said, he made the whole process as painless as possible. He made learning Philosophy, a simple process and explained everything in great deal. Overall, a good prof.
