Tate's classes changed my life. My notes from both History of Design and History of Modern Arch are some of the most valuable things I own. His classes are challenging - he requires depth of thought and wants you to make your own connections. Listen to the stories, buy into his perspective, and you'll walk away with a whole new way of seeing.

Tate, is a wonderful professor and an even better person. He genuinely wants his students to fall in love with life. I had him for History of Design and although it is lecture heavy, allow yourself to really listen, because it matters. Tate does not want surface level answers on test, he wants to see how you view the world.

This class is very demanding. Tate will notice when you don't show up to class. Pay attention to detail, you can never take "too many" notes in this class. I loved this course, I learned SO much. You're graded on a midterm & a final along with the weekly quizzes. It wasn't easy but is very possible to get a good grade!

SO heres the thing with TATE. He is an architect, a philosopher, a poet, THE MOST INTERESTING MAN IN THE WORLD, HE IS NOT A PROFESSOR. The other reviews, they are 100% right. There IS a method to HIS MADNESS. His entire ethos is to have you become self aware and independent and not a clog in the machine. He's the best teacher you'll ever have.

Tate truly changes your way of thinking. Although studio can be confusing b/c he lives for uncertainty, you get used to it. Everything you do in studio has an underlying purpose. Its not at all easy, but its not supposed to be. He truly wants everyone to succeed. Also be able to take criticism, hes not afraid to tell you if something sucks.

Tate is so kind and you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to learn. however, he makes absolutely zero sense. he is unorganized and doesn't tell us what we have to do and it takes a couple days for everyone in the class to figure out what he means/wants from you. you don't have a choice on if you have him, so just a warning.

Tate is an amazing professor. His class changed my way of thinking and is unlike any class I have ever taken at JMU. Don't get me wrong, you definitely have to try in this class, especially on quizzes every week, but it is well worth it. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to be at lectures, and they are honestly very interesting. BEAT NAVY.

This class was not easy for me, and if Tate hadn't been unable to teach the second half of the semester, I may have gotten a worse grade than I did. Saying that, this man changed my life and I wouldn't have regretted taking his class even if I had failed it. He is the most inspirational and best human being I have met on this planet so far.

Tate is a great teacher! But he pushes you, so if you can't handle being pushed beyond your comfort zone or doing alot of work then he isn't the teacher for you. Go to every class, it's not boring. Study for the quizzes each week. Worship Meggs and Sagemiester. Helvetica and Baskerville are your friends. Beat Navy.

Tate doesn't give any guidance. You may think you're doing well, and he'll love your process and your models, but then he'll throw you under the bus during critique. He doesn't realize that students need professors who will be direct and tell them when something is wrong. He'll let you go all the way, only to let you drown when it counts

I had tate for modern architecture and history of design. Best professor i've ever had. He changes the way you see and think of things all around you. Has the best stories so that makes class enjoyable. A lot of work to keep up with so make sure you don't get behind. Definitely take him if you can!!

Tate is awful. He only speaks in philosophical sentences. He assigns so much work that its not humanly possible to get it done. If you don't make things he likes he doesn't think you are smart of creative. He thinks he is a genius and that everything he says is brilliant when it isn't. If you argue with him he still wont listen to you.

Tate, is great! the people who complain are complaining about hard work/having to figure out the answer for themselves.Tate is a professor who will push you, learning how to be an individual who takes guidance but is their own leader, and he likes it when you test him that is the point to see how strongly you hold to your own thoughts and ideas.

Tate pushes students. In my case, he pushed me too far. He threw away my art because he didn't like it. He gave so many assignments that I was forced to withdraw from the class so that my other classes weren't affected. While he is great, Tate is extremely unrealistic and I was disappointed that his class has nothing to do with interior design.

AMAZING!!! This class was so much fun. Tate is one of a kind. He is so encouraging and really cares about his students. He made me feel like I could take over the world. Take him if at all possible! Probably my favorite teacher EVER!

My absolute FAVORITE professor at JMU. He demands alot from you, but is understanding, and always willing to work with you. TAKE HIM!!
