Comment:
A lot of reading and a lot of writing for this course. The grading criteria for the papers, which there's 1 every week, is pretty arbitrary and difficult; it takes a long time to learn how to write about what Gamm is looking for. It's a fascinating class and he's a good lecturer but the TAs are extremely tough, so take the class at your own risk

Extremely tough grader, TAs grading even tougher. Lot of readings and homework. Just don't overestimate yourself. Trust me.

Prof. Gamm is the best political science lecturer I have ever had. Very passionate and bright. Get ready to read and write alot. Exam is difficult, but doable. Great professor!

Comment:
Too many textbooks and too much reading. Grading is arbitrary and often makes 0 sense at all. Feedback was never useful. That being said the professor is extremely passionate about the subject.

I took 202 and 241W with Gamm and he's truly a professor who deeply values his students' points of view. Though he assigns a lot of reading and is a tough grader, you will become a better writer for it. Utilize his office hours and don't be afraid to speak up.

His instructions are clear, he's pretty helpful. There's though tons of readings for the class and it is literally VERY hard.

Very good professor, very engaging and passionate and approachable. The people who complain about him are usually the type who think they deserve an A just for showing up and doing their homework or who whine about having to read --gasp--100 pages a week! At one of the top Universities in the country? NOOOO!

Comment:
Professor Gamm is an extremely good professor because he is extremely passionate about his teachings. However, this class is just awful because of the expected amount of reading. He expects the students to read about 100 pages per week. The TA's are also very tough at grading which makes receiving good grades on papers and tests extremely difficult

Comment:
Class should be called "History of people who write papers about Political Science." Lectures are very good, but he expects you to respond to paper questions in a very specific manner. Winds up being more about the reading itself than what the reading is actually about, and this drives me up the wall.

Professor Gamm is fantastic. Have had him for both 202 and 241, Urban Change. I've found him to be extremely interested in his students' thoughts and easy to engage with. 241 has a significant workload but I think it's fair because of how in-depth the course is. His lectures are always insightful, and it's clear he cares deeply about the subjects.

Lectures are ok. EXCESSIVE reading and writing. TAs were extremely tough graders. You'll likely feel you didn't get the grade you deserve on papers. Would never take this class if not required for major - uninteresting and overbearing. Wish Gamm would take a step back and re-examine the course.

Comment:
His lectures are not great. They are average - starting out pretty good in the beginning of the semester and declining into oblivion and seemingly irrelevant information. TAs are harsh and probably not uniform in grading. WAYYY too much reading - excessive writing. Would never take the class if it weren't required for the major. Ever.

He is an amazing lecturer but if you try to discuss with him outside of class you feel like you are being tested rather than assisted. It is frustrating working so hard and not receiving the grade you think you deserve because of the arbitrary value he puts on certain things over others.

Aloof and above the students, good lecturer but good luck talking to him outside of class. seems to care about students until he actually has to do something, then his condescending attitude is evident.

Gamm is a good lecturer. BUT he is not very approachable or understanding. He doesn't really care about his students. It is very hard to shake him from his devotion to academia (good and bad) and robot students.

Really good lecturer though sometimes covers seemingly irrelevant material. Very very long (but fair and relatively easy) final. Extremely large amounts of reading (sometimes it's a little excessive and unnecessary). Grading between sections (by the TAs) wasn't always consistent, and Gamm is very reluctant to override the TAs.

Though not liked by all, Professor Gamm is a very strong teacher and a good person. He's a tough but very fair grader; if you're willing work hard and are interested in the material, you should do well. He runs a very structured course, good for organized people (or people trying to get more organized).
