Comment:
Taking CIS 300 from rod is all about following his directions to the letter. He wants everything done in a very specicic way, and If it's not, you'll lose points. The labs and tests are only slightly challenging, but the projects are pretty difficult most of the time, so don't wait until the last miniute to start them.

He's got cold and distant person but otherwise a solid professor. This is a very concept heavy course, so you'll have to do a lot of reading and preparation if you want to succeed. Homeworks are ridiculously long and labs take a lot of brainpower but do yourself a favor and invest yourself in these areas and the exams will no problem

Comment:
This class is not geared well for teaching students who are new to coding. The homeworks are unnecessarily convoluted for new-ish students and getting reasonable time with TAs can almost be impossible. The material you are provided to learn how to program is underwhelming.

His classes are hard but as long as you enjoy the subject matter and study you will do fine. Dr. Howell is a clear and concise professor who presents expectations and materials in a way that's easy to understand. If you don't pass it is because you didn't put enough work in.

After two semesters of Howell, this is what I have learned: Focus your energy on tests, memorize his solutions like the back of your hand, pay careful attention to his written instructions - there are hints abound, learn his lingo - he takes extreme care in the way he words himself, & reach out to TAs for help b4 its too late - they felt your pain!

Dr. Howell is a very good teacher, but his class is pretty hard. The key to his class is to read before class and pay attention during his lecture. The material he covers is very important for future computer science courses.

Not one to call profs "tough" but Howell will be one of the few. I consider myself pretty hard working but Howell hits the point of destructively challenging 4 an intro. Class is 90% based on tests with 3-4 questions 30+ points each. Asking for help or collaboration with peers will give you a zero on assignments. Office hours? Don't bother going.

Comment:
He makes CIS300 much more harder than it should for a base programming class. Expects you to know C# like the back of your hand and to remember every single detail that comes out of his lectures. The class starts to become increasingly more vague and you'll exponentially have to dedicate more time outside of class learning material.

Rigid professor. He knows his material but is not very accommodating. A lot of emphasis on exams which are pretty difficult. Would absolutely NOT take him again.

Dr Howell is very bright but can be very dull and mediocre. His class is very difficult and you will have to put in a lot of time for this class.

Overall, Howell is a mediocre professor. Decent lecturer, but you'll have to study outside of labs to keep up with the material. That's important because his exams make up a big portion of the points in the class, and knowing the material and how it all works helps tremendously. Start homework assignments early!

He is a horrible teacher, does not show time or devotion to his students. Seems less versed on his subject matter to those who actually understand programming in general.

Class is consisted of 40 labs, each of 2 points. The lowest 5 are dropped. The exams are pretty tough and you have to memorize a lot for it.

Clearly a brilliant professor. I quite enjoyed his class, but there's no denying it was difficult. The instructions on the homework were somewhat hard to follow, but manageable. Lab exercises can be particularly difficult at times, but the finished applications were, often, very cool. Any extracurricular programming experience goes a long way.

Great guy he really knows his stuff. It took a while for me to get used to him but at the end I really appreciated him. Instructions are as clear as they can be without doing it for you. He goes out of his way to make sure there is nearly always someone available to help you if you need it. I learned a LOT in this class. I'll take him again.

I would say his ability to teach is exactly average. Dry personality, helfpful if you ask. The assignments are pretty difficult and require a lot of time outside of class to keep up. Do not fall behind, every class builds on the skills learned in the previous one. Literally. You will load yesterdays assignment and build on it.

Dr. Howell is a very intelligent teacher, but he lacks the personality to interact effectively with students. His class was relatively easy as long as you attended every lecture. His tests consist of 3-4 code questions where you have to complete the code by hand. Be prepared to write code on his tests.

Comment:
Poor execution for the second basic programming course. Professor teaches through slides and poorly written instructions for lab assignments and homework leaving students confused about what needs to be done. Teacher does not seem to care if a majority of the class did not complete previous lab assignments and will move on to the next topic.

Comment:
Very rough teaching style. This is the kind of teaching you would probably expect at senior or grad level, not a beginner level course. Spent the whole semester asking him or his TA's for help on all the material. Very hard to understand slide descriptions on class work and homework. Study hard, and hope for very smart TA's.
