Comment:
Gieskes is a really chill professor and is passionate about Shakespeare. His teaching style is very Socratic, but if students don't answer, he'll sometimes just say "that's something to think about," without really answering it himself. He will always look over a paper for you, but can grade a bit harshly. The quizzes can be tricky. He's a cool guy

Dr. Gieskes is one of my most favorite professors (I even took him twice, just because I saw he was teaching a different class). It is very rare to find a professor that not only really cares about the material they are teaching, but that also cares about his students. You don't have to go to class, but he discuss everything which helps for papers.

Mr. Gieskes is a great guy who is very passionate about his students and Shakespeare. You read 7 plays and there are quizzes on each which can be tricky. He gives you paper topics that aren't too hard but he is a pretty hard grader. Final exam is pretty awful but if you do well on everything else, you should get a decent grade in the class.

He is a great person but as far as teaching style it was hard for me to learn. But he's very willing to help you out if you need help.

Gieskes is a great professor! He treats everyone with respect and is always willing to help his students. I loved his class, even though his meaning wasn't always clear and his feedback isn't too great.

Gieskes is a great prof. He had a hard time getting our class involved, but I think that was just because it was a 9am class. He's really understanding about overworked students, but takes deadlines seriously. Just explain your situation though and he's usually cool about it.

he is a very helpful prof. allows you to let him read the paper and make corrections before you actually turn it in for a grade. youll read boring plays and class was a real bore but u watch some entertaining movies of the plays...just bring the daily gamecock to keep u entertained

Great guy. Grades papers fairly tough, but if you can write well there should be no problem. Class actually improves your writing. Not too tough to get the A if you put in some work. Easy to get a B. No final. Go to class because he notices who is there and who is not. Does consider rounding if you show up to class and participate.

Awesome professor. He really knows his stuff and has a good sense of humor. He's pretty laid back but his papers are pretty hard. The last one was 10-12 pages but you get to pick your own topic. I'd take him again if the papers didn't have to be so long.

he only gives you like 3 days to read a novel and then asks 4 random detailed questions about it..so i didn't read anything. only 2 papers and they arent even long. you can sign in and walk out. just hope you get a good TA bc they do all the grading. final exam sucks bc its 4 essays but not that hard

Well, there's quite a bit of reading, but you don't have to do much with it. There are two papers which really aren't that difficult if you've read the books and attended class. Quizzes on each book can be tricky (only 4 questions) and a little detail-oriented, but often he'll only quiz you on the first half or so.

He's a good guy when you talk to him. Other than reading Shakespeare (which I hate doing) the class wasn't that bad. You don't have to stay for his lectures, just sign in and you can basically walk out. Whenever I needed help from him on the one big paper we had to write (only 2 all semester, and 1 is a response) he kindly offered help.

He's an alright professor and knows what he's talking about, but the lectures were pretty pointless to attend as it was difficult to understand him in a lecture hall with around 200 or so people in it. The amount of literature for this class was absolutely ridiculous. Not enough time to fully understand any of the novels.

So here's the thing. He's really nice and really passionate about what he teaches, but he is so boring! There's alot of reading (4 plays and 5 novels) and the quizzes aren't easy, even if you've read the book. The TA's grade everything and you really only learn during the discussion section; lecture is mostly just an overview of what you've read.

For 283 you read Shakespeare, which is painful but he makes it really easy. We read five novels and 4 plays so it's a lot and you have reading quizes on all of them but the quizes aren't bad. He must realize nobody reads all of them because most of the reading questions are from the very beginning of the books. Take him if you can.

Gieskes is a good teacher but he has a tendency to select religious-themed works only, which can be a bit grating for any non-religious person. Class can be kind of boring, but what English class isn't... he doesn't seem to care if you do Sudoku puzzles during class. He also has a quirky, funny sense of humor. I'd recommend him.

Not too bad of a class. The papers are the worst part and they don't get rough until the last one. (It has to be 10-12 pages). Very nice guy, always willing to help.
