The course is heavily text influenced. Be prepared to read 5+ books before midterms. He doesnt teach about actual historical events but more on the authors and their opinions on history. He means well but he is an awful teacher

His lectures are pretty interesting and its important to listen closely. Pretty heavy in reading, but there are only 3 exams and 2 essays over the semester. As long as you read the majority of the material, attended class, and youre able to form an option about the material youll be fine.

Has good intentions, but takes every grade and bumps it down a letter. I think he might be afraid of the letter A, as my classmates will attest that one of those has never appeared in his class.

Pretty simple class. It was a bit tough for 100 level, but as a freshman with average grades I was fine all the time. There are readings assigned weekly, but I only did some of it. As long as you go to recitation+lecture you should be all set. He likes to focus on the social aspect of history, making it more opinion based and usually easier.

The most unfair grading system I have ever seen. I was and engineering student and failed his class. The worst thing that ever happened to me. I passed my PHY, CHY and calc2 but failed his history class. It was not my fault!

Avoid this class. Professor Riordan sits there for the entire 50+ (he regularly goes 5 minutes over class time) class talking AT you. He does use powerpoints, however they don't help with note taking as they typically only contain 4-5 words or a map. Plus his voice is super annoying. His assignments are also very unclear and never has office hours.

The class isn't that bad but he has this idea that only social history matters so he makes that all he talks about it's irritating at first but after a while it becomes frankly grating also he talks about Native Americans in such a way that I'm not sure he's ever met one

Made us use a graduate students book for a 100 level class. Wasted lecture time. Way too high of expectations and provide little help outside of class.

This professor had us read a book that was far out of common comprehension levels. His lecture power points were unhelpful and hard to derive information from. I learned more in discussion section with his TAs than I did from any of his lectures.

I learned more from his TA than from him. His lectures are so unclear and often don't seem to have a point. His tests are ridiculously hard. I wish I hadn't taken this class

For a 100 level class, this course is pretty hard. Riordan has us reading graduate level books that suck to read...especially if you're not interested in history. He is very passionate about history, yet his lectures are so boring. I think this class is too hard for someone who doesn't need it.

Great class with lots of information covered on the Atlantic World. Very picky on his essays; hard to earn an A. I learned a lot of new information. The discussions were great and open to all interpretation of the readings. It wasn't a incredibly difficult class, but is time consuming.

Horrible class. Professor did not give any objective information whatsoever. We learned his own viewpoint on events and nothing else. He even renamed a war due to the fact that he felt the war was inappropriately named. Depends entirely on books and his TAs to do the grunt work. Worst class/professor I've ever seen. Avoid at all costs.

He is good about giving information during lectures but the TA's that he teach grade so harshly and give you little to no feedback. The essays are extremely hard and quizzes too. This is an entry level course and should be graded accordingly... especially someone like me who only takes this class to fulfill a credit.

Impossible to get an A. Writes "clear concise" on your paper and gives you a B. While he does his best to teach the class, most of us didn't really learn that much. We learned how to interpret the revolution, not anything about it. Stay away unless you want to put in A effort and only get a B.

This is by far the worst class and the worst professor I have ever had at the University of Maine. His expectations are no where near a 100 level class should be. I was disappointed with his philosophy that A's should only be given out to a select few. He needs to learn that a 100 level class is graded differently than a graduate level class.

Stereotypical example of a college professor. He is extremely intelligent and passionate, but you don't feel a teacher to student connection. He doesn't reach out, but is available if you go out of your way. A ton of reading and this is a different take on history as compared to average knowledge. Good class overall.

Very passionate dedicated professor. The readings for this class were very dry, and it is a very reading-intensive class; however, it's very enjoyable and you get a new perspective on history.
