Comment:
I think I would have liked Dr. Baumlin and the class a lot more if I took it seated, but COVID made that nearly impossible. It felt a little more disconnected than a normal English class. His pre-recorded lectures are a little boring, but he is funny at times. I'd like to give him another chance, but overall, my experience was OK.

Comment:
Baumlin was a great teacher, drawing attention to thinking outside the box with his philosophical lectures. This teacher is very discussion focused during class which will help you with course work. Not a class that you won't be doing a fair share of work in, but an extremely fair teacher with leniency. Very personable and overall a great person.

Dr. Baumlin is very full of himself but he's a great teacher and extremely smart. Makes me feel dumb haha. But if you don't like to write, do not take this class.

Comment:
Dr. Baumlin is a good guy, but he is a very tough nut to crack as a professor. He is ridiculously brilliant and clearly knows his source material. Sometimes, however, it is difficult to stay connected to his lectures because of how "smart" they are. Make sure you read EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, because he has high expectations and difficult concepts.

Dr. Baumlin is one of the best professors the English department has to offer. He is approachable, friendly, and passionate about his subject matter. If you get the chance, definitely take one of his courses! They're aren't easy, but college isn't supposed to be about comfort. You certainly won't regret taking one of his courses.

He is very lecture heavy and old-fashioned. He doesn't put notes on BB anymore because he wants people to attend class and you have to start listening from the beginning of the lecture or you'll be lost the entire time. Do not take if you aren't good at pure lecture classes. There is a 300 level class before this that should be taken first.

Although he seems a bit strange at first, he is a great guy always giving life advice and wanting to see his students succeed. Book is used occasionally outside of and in class. Took attendance for a grade. As an 8 a.m. class, it seems like a joke to get up and go, so if you're not a morning person, don't take it at 8 a.m.

Although English is one of my favorite subjects, I absolutely hated this class & this professor. If it was posed as a philosophy class it may have been better. Everything is unorganized, the concepts don't relate/make much sense to be an English class, & the professor wasn't available for help outside of class. The books required were good though.

He is a highly intellectual professor and definitely knows what he's talking about, but his class is all lecture. Hard to take notes and follow along because he often goes off on several branches away from what he originally started talking about. Not very clear instructions for essay assignments. Definitely be ready to read and listen every day.

One of my most favorite professors! I took him for intro to Shakespeare and have signed up for two more of his classes. He is friendly and approachable. He keeps class interesting also. Attendance isnt counted which is good, but his tests will throw you off if you havent been or didnt read. I gave minimal effort but still got an A

He doesn't value opinions on literature that don't agree with his own. He gets annoyed if you try to bring up ideas he didn't think of first. He picks a handful of favorites at the beginning of the semester and ignores everyone else. He's disrespectful to female students. And if he doesn't like you, he won't give feedback or answer questions.

I'm very sad this is the last class I'll have the chance to take from him, as I'll be graduating soon. But Baumlin is an amazing teacher. He is passionate about his craft (teaching), and he makes you care about material that's 400+ years old as much as he does. If you have not had the chance to take him for a course, please do.

I had to juggle writing five lengthy essays in this class while also doing the intense amount of reading he gave us. His lectures are great and you have a lot of great discussions. He will always relate assignments and lectures to what interests you. If you put in the work you will get a good grade though. I never got below a 95% on any essay.

Dr. Baumlin is probably one of the worst professors I've had in my time at Missouri State. He's unorganized, unfocused, and kind of a misogynist. I'm sure he's absolutely brilliant and would probably do better in a course that isn't 400+ year survey, but this class was a bust for me.

Baumlin is such an interesting guy, his lectures are hilarious and he makes the readings relatable to modern audiences. Do the readings and the blog posts and you'll pass the class. Attendance isn't mandatory but his lectures are great so I'd show up anyway

I love Dr. Baumlin. His lectures tend to be a bit rambling, but it is all relevant to the text you are reading. He is very funny, knows a lot about literature and life and will give you his view on things. I left the class more well rounded and open minded. Lot of reading, but if you go to class and do all of the reading, you will do well.

Easily my favorite professor at MSU! I have gone out of my way to be able to take him again. He's fascinating, hilarious, down to earth, philosophical, and makes you fall in love with the readings. He has so much advice to give, he easily gets off topic, and I Iove it because I love hearing his life lessons. If you don't take him you're missing out
