Average professor. Not terrible, not great. If you are an A student he will give you As when it is evident your paper had issues. Seems like he does not read over students work. Marks can vary and he changes his expectations throughout the course.

I look for the classes he teaches. Though, if you hate essays avoid him. He only uses essays. Other than that hes super charismatic and understanding. Tough grading but if you go to his tutorials and talk to him you're almost guaranteed a good grade!

Whoever marks the papers is extremely difficult. The grading scheme is unfair and not much freedom to choose from when writing a paper.

Dr. von Heyking is incredibly staunch in his beliefs, which are generally quite conservative. I'd advise any fellow queer folks to skip out on his class due to his often maligning of 'safe spaces' and 'social justice warriors'. Lots of papers, which can get tiresome. Provides many opportunities for extra credit, though those assignments are long.

Best Prof I've ever had. So sad that this is my last year at the U. Genuinely caring person and incredibly intelligent. His pocketsquares are bomb as well. Will miss JvH the mostest.

He is obviously very passionate about what he teaches, but his lectures contain almost no actual material. His course consists of five papers and no tests. Either him or the TAs are tough markers but are very helpful if you have any questions. Makes a lot of jokes but usually comes off as condescending and rude.

If you like philosophy, this is a perfect course. Graded on 4 papers so it's tough to make up for it if you write a bad paper. Interesting lectures, clearly knowledgable and passionate about the content. Interesting enough. Attendance not necessarily mandatory if you understand the readings without needing it to be simplified.

I've had JvH for a few classes and he is easily my favourite prof. Socratic style lecture, and quite a bit of reading. No tests, but can be a bit of writing. Very enthusiastic and teaches his passion. Absolutely recommend.

You get to read some good foundational material on political thought, religion and history but lectures lack much inspiration and he is not accepting of challenging ideology. Grading is very hard and if you don't love writing papers then spend your time elsewhere.

The readings in this class were sometimes hard to get through, but so valuable to my education as a whole. The paper topics were challenging. He is a tough marker. I found the lectures interesting, and if you ask him for clarification on paper expectations, he will help you. Take this class to round out your knowledge of early political theory.

I found his lectures to be amazing, but he gives absolutely no direction on the papers. I went for help and I was more confused after I talked to him. Extremely hard for a second year course. Papers are basically an analysis of an analysis of the work that you read in class. Why can't we just analyze what we read in class?

NO! Absolutely terrible professor. Do the readings at home, write the paper and hand it in. Zero point in going to the lecture, all he does is summarize what you've already read and understood in the most condescending way possible -- like you aren't capable of understanding basic literature. Extremely arrogant, disrespectful to students, paranoid.

Comment:
Newest reading was published in 1689. Extremely arrogant, acts as if every word that comes out of his mouth is the most profound thing in the world. Lose MASSIVE marks if you screw up grammarformatting on his papers. Went from a + to a - because I didn't make up a title, which he didn't ask for. Challenge his ideology at your own peril.

Such a great prof. Helpful, consistent, and challenging. He's not stuck up at all, and pushes me to be better than myself... what more can you ask for? Also amazingly encouraging -- HIGHLY recommended. Probably one of the smartest profs at the U of L but in a subtle and not condescending way.

Personally, I didn't find JvH to be that tough of a marker. Maybe it's the TA. Attendance is mandatory in order to get all his notes as he doesn't post them online. They are also extremely helpful when writing papers. Offers a lot of bonus assignments to bump up your final grade. Good prof.

I've taken most of JvH's classes and have never regretted it. He's a wonderful prof, clear and definitely engaging. You definitely need the textbook and do you reading, but otherwise it's quite easy to get a good grade with him. He's fair.

Marks fairly, and classes are interesting. I appreciated the way he encouraged student participation. His slide shows are helpful and informative, and he has lots of bonus assignments. I put a lot of effort in and got an A-, so although the class wasn't super hard, it's definitely not an easy A. More like an easy B.

Comment:
Failed me as a professor, especially compared to high standards set by others in the dept. Unavailable to students, rude in communicating with them, and provides the minimal of comments on written work. Four days before final paper was due I received my last paper back. Not sure if he thinks 4 days is adequate time to write or if comments mean zip.
