This is a grad level class, but he expected more than all my other classes combined, including several other higher level classes. Over 1/3 of the class was struggling and unable to keep up but he actually increased the workload! I was looking forward to learning about this topic, but I regret taking this class. Lloré más que aprendí.

Great professor, very knowledgeable, funny in a dry way. This class helped my pronunciation so much. However a lot of the material can be dense and hard to wrap your head around if you don't have prior linguistics experience or have a genuine interest in it. A lot of studying and work but worth it in my opinion.

Dr. Holt was my first Spanish teacher here and was less stress about taking his class! SPAN 109/110 is basic, simple Spanish but he goes over all materials following the book. He does do some activities in the book so make sure you bring it everyday. He planned for my class to meet for dinner and it was memorable! He makes SPAN fun to learn!

Nice guy who is very passionate about linguistics. Too passionate. This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Do NOT take if you haven't had experience with linguistics & aren't willing to put in 150% effort. He expects WAY too much out of his students & assigns ridiculous amounts of time consuming HW. Had to teach myself everything. AVOID!!

Like many have said, this class does help your Spanish a lot, but is extremely hard. Professor Holt is the kind of professor who knows a lot, and expects you to be on the same level as him, very unrealistic of him. There's a lot of online assignments, and Blackboard is the worst. Tests are very hard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go.

The class would have been interesting.. but I hated it by the end of the semester because of Prof Holt. It wasn't particularly hard but he made major changes to the syllabus (adding assignments, changing how we are graded, etc) multiple times during the semester. Sends out like three e-mails per day but expectations still weren't ever clear

This class is challenging. I sit next to a really big overachiever, and even she thinks it's really difficult. Although he gives a lot of extra credit, the exams are very hard. Therefore, you have to do a lot of work in the class to make an A. The average grades on the exams have been low C's. He's a nice guy, though!

I absolutely adore Prof. Holt. However, the linguistics class is NOT easy. He is VERY helpful albeit sometimes confusing. If you are not comfortable in the Spanish language, I would not advise taking the class.

You absolutely have to take this class. It should be mandatory, not an elective. Prof. Holt is the best professor I've had in my 2 years here. Reminds me of Doctor House. Didn't realize how crappy my Spanish was til now. I have made leaps and bounds in my pronunciation in just a semester. Understanding, lets you redo hw if you don't quite get it.

This was probably the greatest class I have taken. He was able to really help me learn Spanish and actually understand it where my previous profs were unable to do it. If I could take this course all over again, I would. Easy grader who really knows his stuff!!!

Oh my gosh this man is amazing! I love his class so so much. Most fun class I have ever taken in my life. He knows so much about Spanish and his class is such an easy A. PLEASE take his class if you have the chance, you will not regret it! Hardly any work at all and he grades so easily!
