MATH312 6 week Summer Course - Fast paced, medium accent, can be funny, straight to the point, does enough examples, explains material well, labs were meh, homework not graded but you gotta do it to learn, tests were pretty good, final seemed medium hard but I still pulled an A-

Dr. Melrose is great at teaching, but his exams are hard. Study a lot, do the homework, go to office hours. I would have gotten an A but his final exam was cumulative and AWFUL. Aside from that, definitely recommend him. Nice and funny, though he will get frustrated when the class messes up.

Will do everything to help you understand the concepts given, and will meet after class to talk through problems and examples given earlier or help you come up with your own. Will go over the content expected on tests, and will give good guides representative of them. He is easygoing if you attend class/study and will feel like a fast friend.

His lectures are enjoyable and will with plenty of material. The homework is mandatory if you want an A. He will give easy problems on the tests and quizzes. Overall, it was one of the best classes I've taken.

Calc 3 is an extremely difficult class, but if you study extensively you should do well. He had 4 tests (60% of grade), 5-6 quizzes (10% of grade), and 1 final. He drops the lowest quiz. He gives a bunch of practice problems to go over before every test, do all of them. He can be kind of mean, but overall he is funny. Good at partial credit.

Comment:
Extremely difficult class. His lectures are fantastic and thorough (truly some of the BEST), but his test are exceedingly difficult and do not cohere with the much easier problems worked in class. My scores were consistently 15-20 points above average, yet I received a C in the class, which was very disappointing and unexpected.

Dr. Melrose is the best professor I have ever had. He is beyond passionate about the content and is able to explain the materials in a way that you can visualize what is happening. Calc 3 is hard. You MUST do the homework and study or you will fail. The lectures are fascinating and he is hilarious.

Does not uses the book, quizzes/tests come from PDF posted to Blackboard. Teaches the easiest problems in class, tests for the most difficult questions that were not explained in class but he expects you to be able to solve. Class problem example: How much is 2+2? Test question: Evaluate x+y, between the solid bounded by a sphere on a cylinder.

Test #1 CLASS AVERAGE 61% Test #2 CLASS AVERAGE 55% This means, in test 1 the great majority of the class (about 40 individuals) got an F or a D in the test. In test #2, the class majority (about 30 individuals) got BELLOW AN F ! Calc III is difficult, yes, there is no debating that. But, for a WHOLE CLASS to be failing?

This professor was absolutely horrible. He has a very condescending attitude that makes you feel stupid, and he leaves insulting comments on your work. Makes the class so hard that you have to neglect others just to barely pass. Very few tests but are hard and count a lot toward final grade. Impossible person. You'll hate math if you take him.

I am currently in his class, if you can avoid this guy: AVOID HIM! He doesn't explain the most difficult concepts in class, but rather posts a bunch of PDF in BB for you to read and figure on your own. On test, you'll find the most difficult problems, nothing like what was on class. We had the 1st test, and half the class is failing... stay away!

This professor is terrible. He insults students and attempts to humiliate them in front of the whole class, which discourages question asking. I asked a question one time and he was so focused on insulting me he didn't answer the question I asked! I also read the good reviews and was misled, I don't recommend him. Unless you like being insulted....

Effective teacher if you are a math major. However, his motivation tactics are to disrespect the student's intelligence and work ethic. The man insulted us every class. Rarely will ever build you up. I found his general demeanor towards students discouraged asking questions in class. You can get an A if you prioritize this class and ignore others.

Easily one of my favorite professors. He's a no BS, tough, yet helpful teacher that genuinely cares about helping you if you put on the work. Do ALL of the practice problems he posts on blackboard and spend plenty of time in the calc lab, the student tutors there are very helpful and were essential to success in the class.

Overall great professor. Must do required homework in order to do well on the tests. Also gives online homework which is very similar to the test questions. I reviewed the highest grade on the final in the class, but definitely had to study and work for it.

Dr. Melrose is my favorite teacher at ODU thus far. I took Calc 3 after a 2 year hiatus from math. I don't think I would have gotten better than a B with another teacher. He doesn't give extra credit often (if ever) and does not curve except I believe he curved slightly at the end. Very personable and helpful. He makes math interesting and fun!

Dr. Melrose is an incredibly intelligent professor who obviously cares about the material covered. After explaining the material he works several examples, and he asks if there are questions pertaining homework assignments(which aren't mandatory) at the start of every class. I would take Melrose again for all my remaining math courses if I could.

Calc III is probably going to be tough in general. Dr. Melrose is extremely intelligent. He goes fast but pay attention, take notes and do your homework and you will be fine. I hadn't been to school in 3 years and took this class, as well as three other classes, my first semester back. and got an A in all my classes and still worked.
