I found Larry to be the hardest english prof i've had at MUN. I am working towards an english major and I've taken many english courses which I usually get about the same mark in all my essays. In Larry's course the average of my essays was 10% lower than the mark I normally have gotten in all other english courses.

Was intimidated about the 6 novels I had to read.. And found him a little intimidating at first. However when I went to see him during office hours, he turned out to be one of the most helpful profs I've ever had. Encouraged me that I could get through the course and that my ideas were good after all. Showed me anything is possible with the effort.

Was very intimidated with all the reading, which was 6 novels, and Dr. Mathews at first seems like a pretty tough professor. However, when I went to seem him, he turned out to be one of the most helpful profs I've ever had. He assured me that my ideas were good and that I could get through the course after all... Very inspiring prof!

Not a good prof. Stay away from this guy. He grades way to hard for a first year english class. Gives little feedback on essays. Only good thing is he gives an easy quiz on each novel. He also mumbles all class. Overall not a good prof.

Horrible prof. Class is purely based on discussion by students and he provides little help. Needs to learn how to teach a class himself. He also gives reading quizzes worth way too much of your grade. Avoid at all costs.

This was an easy course to get a good mark in, just read the books. Larry gave good feedback on essays. The more you talk in class the better, otherwise things get VERY BORING and class will drag.

I found Dr. Mathews class to be better then most. English is a boring subject to me, but he made it interesting through class discussions. You'll get what you put in from his class. I found him to not grade to difficulty and his comments on returned work were helpful, he even gives quizzes every week to test if you read the material...easy marks

If you're looking to do well in this course... you won't. You need to go in as if you were a 3rd level English Major and interpret the novels as if you were the one who wrote it. Not a very nice prof, please stay away at all cost. Novels are dry and are all Newfoundland authors, very boring.

I found this guy to be a great prof. He tries to get discussions and interpretations goings, which is great, and doesn't mind the silence while students wait to answer, which is also good. A good humoured guy, even if it doesnt always come out during class. Found him very helpful too... just read the novels and think critically. :)

I highly recommend you stay away from this course, unless you are the next Shakespeare. He expects you to know a lot, and also wants a lot of discussion. If you do decide to take this course/prof be prepared for a lot of unclarity. He's a nice guy in person, but he seems to be a bit unfair when it comes to marking. Maybe that's just me. Good Luck

Mathews isn't about bells and whistles but you wont find anything self-mastabatory about him either. He picks great novels to study and is very open to interpretations. If anything, he's a little shy; doesn't pick on students and there's no wrong way to approach him. Some days he mumbles through his lectures; sit close to the front.

Dr. Matthews is a really sweet prof. I don't know where people are getting that he's rude. He gives us quizzes and if we think they're too hard, he makes them easier the second time around. His lectures are a bit boring, but he gives good insight into the novels.

He ALWAYS encouraged class discussion during his lectures and was a fair marker. Just incorporate what you're supposed to have learned in 1080 into your essays and you should do well. I was very quiet in his class and by no means "one of his favourites" and still pulled off an A+. Not a bad prof at all!!

Certainly a bit dry, but the man is a perfectly fair marker and always makes attempts to engage the class. And if you go to class, he gives you tonnes of material to use for your essays because he constantly cites examples with page references.

HAS AN UNFAIR REPUTATION!! I concur that his voice is a bit dry,&the lack of eye contact can be a bit disengaging, but he gives really good lectures & analysis of the novels studied. As well he encourages discussion amongst students. Like any course, seeing him outside of class is beneficial, but I simply sat there and took notes & still did well!!

Boring is the nicest word I can manage. He's also rude, monotone to the point of screaming, & he courts his favourites & ignores everyone else. He comes across as a failed writer & has a chip on his shoulder in that regard. He NEVER makes eye contact & has all the personality of a wet sponge. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE stay away from this nasty loser!

Comment:
Dr. Mathews is actually a really nice prof. I was kinda worried before I started last term because some people were critical of him. He gave extensions if we needed them and I think he was a fair marker.
