Same amount of homework every week. It's easy but time consuming. Just show up to class, do the homework and study for quizzes and you will get a good grade

Dr. Engle is a great professor. Spring 2017 will be his last year teaching. You have to take notes and read the book. He does ramble on during lecture but his ramblings help on the test. You can get extra credit if you do more than 5 folklore pieces in your group project. There are 3 tests that are 50 questions. I enjoyed his class a lot.

His tests are absolutely impossible and his lectures are completely unintelligible. He rambles, goes off on tangents, doesn't talk loud enough, and he just doesn't make sense. I look at my notes and don't know what I've written. He's all over the place. He just tells you to look at your notes if you're confused.

Sounded good for a filler course, but completely useless in terms of actually learning something interesting. Take the basic definition of folklore and you have already completed the course. An English course would be more fun and more engaging.

As poor as lecturers come. The man only goes over what was written in the text. If you've read the text, don't bother coming to class. It doesn't help that he's poor at projecting his voice. I didn't put in any effort and I got a B. If you want a prof with few and easy assignments, he's your man. The sacrifice will be in the quality of the lecture.

He talks about literally everything in the book and when he tries to help you, he gives you a half-(you know the word) correction and doesn;t even have the decency to help you through it. You can't read his writing,so it is really hard to make corrections. Hate the teacher, but if you do the project with extra credit and do decent on tests,it=pass.

One the most helpful teachers I have ever had. Spent many hours after class in his office as I entered 2b when I probably shouldn't have but he is absolutely willing to help no matter what. You can just tell he cares about each individual student. Very funny as well, some people may not get his humor but I think he is hilarious!

It is absolutely necessary to attend class; the tests can be tricky, and include info that is both in the text and from lecture. He grades the exams on a curve (thankfully). A huge part of the course grade is a group project -- work on it throughout the semester and it's an easy "A". Dr. Engle is very helpful and easy to work with -- he's great.

He is a really good teacher. I finished that class with an A and walked out feeling like my German improved quite a bit. Do the hw when it's assigned or you'll fall behind because he collects everything when you have a chapter test. He's funny and very cool. I enjoyed him very much!

he may not make much sense in class, as i never understood him half the time, but its a hard subject to comprehend. scored low on his tests.we had a group project and had to make a folklore collection based on our own experiences.how easy!he gave us a written collection on blackboard that helped us big time!and we got lots of extra credit.got an A!

Test scores are usually all extremely low. With the way he grades and the extra credit he offers is possible to get an A. Must come to lectures because lecture info not in the book and is on the test.

I'm sure to some he is an amazing professor, but I don't respond well to his teaching method. That isn't any flaw of his, though. I've just had other German profs and much preferred other methods. He does know what he's talking about, but if I didn't have a strong personal interest in German I would have stopped taking these classes ages ago.

He is really fun & energetic! Also very friendly and easy going. His tests are kinda difficult though, but to make up for it he gives everyone a huge curve to bring the average up to passing. I loved that he is sorta a hippie, and not super strict or by the book. He is a little scattered but as long you show up most of the days you'll do well.

I have taken him for the last 3 years, he is such a nice guy. Just read and put forth the effort, easy A. His speech isn't exactly current in Germany (German friend told me this) but you learn a lot.

Stay away from this dude if you can help it. I took this class as an upper GE requirement, what a mistake. He is unclear as to how he wants the folklore documents to look like. Be prepared to write in the class, it should be a W class. He tests from the READER text by E. Oring. Class average on first test was 44 percent, go figure.

Folklore class. Very interesting class, you need to go everytime and focus to pass. if you can pass the midterm and final and do the extra credit on the folklore collection you'll get an A. He is very into questioning everything and it's roots. So if you like to debate take this class. If you don't want to think don't take this class.

Lots of work, and lots of actually talking in German. Some students might be put off by, for example, his speaking ONLY german for the entire FIRST day of class in 1A. I can see how others find his class disorganized, but I found it to be his adaptation to student needs. I highly recommend him.

He makes the class fun especially for an 8 am class. He really wakes you up. I always laugh at least once every class. Most of the time he doesn't take roll so you can miss quite a few classes, but I wouldn't advise it. You need to be there. Always do the homework, it really helps for the tests. He's always willing to help if needed.

Comment:
This teacher is... difficult. If you didn't take his German classes from the beginning you probably wont do well in later classes. I came from a different teacher and I knew everything he was teaching, and knew nothing he assumed I did. Homework load: borderline impossible (with other classes and a job). Class felt VERY disorganized every day.
